The first white settlers in Pembroke Pines were John Wesley Powell and his brother James who arrived in 1836. A post office called "Pinellas" was established in 1839, but it was renamed to its current name in 1881 when the railroad came through town. The name comes from a plantation where Georgia Planter John Boggs owned land before moving to Pembroke Pines and starting a new plantation there called "Boggin's Plantation". In 1884, Drury became the first doctor of medicine in Jacksonville and he set up his practice here until his death in 1916. The citrus industry played an important role in early history of Pembroke Pines because oranges were grown here for export to Spain and other parts of the world. One early grower was Captain Cook who bought some land near present-day Boca Raton back in 1786 for $848 dollars dollars cash or 10 slaves! He planted about 5 acres (2 hectares) of oranges on this property which yielded about 3 bushels per acre (100 grams per hectare). This began what would be one of Captain Cook's most successful citrus crops as he soon realized that this type of crop could be grown far away from Europe where taste differed greatly from European oranges! AfterCaptain Cook's acquisition of this land, other growers followed suit including J.D. Payne who had acquired some adjoining property purchased by Colonel John Stuart Long after their journey down the Panama Canal! By 1800, both Captain Cook's original ugliness- Judd & Company had developed into one OF THE LARGEST ORanges IN AMERICA!. Payne& Co., along with others within years begins marketing their fruit direct to consumers throughout THE REST OF AMERICA!. Today many people are still familiar withCaptain Cook's legacy thru orange production as well as tourism industries which rely heavily upon Orange exports! Another major player duringearly days at Pembroke Pines was Robert Hickey who arrived here circa 1830 with his father George Hickey Sr..In 1850 Robert married Sophia Goodrich (the daughter of Major General Augustus Goodrich)and together they founded what we today call 'Robert Hickey' Nursery & Cold Storage fame - making them one of THE FIRST Oranges TO BE SELLED OUT ELECTRONICALLY FROM A STORAGE AREA AS WE NOW KNOW IT!. Their nursery remains open today under new ownership - remaining family-owned and operated since 1978! They continue to produce top qualityOranges offered through online retailers all across North America!! Another early pioneer hereabouts was Isaac Watts who settled around 1840 - later becoming known as 'Isaac Watts Avenue'. He ran a tannery off Stonington Road which continued operations until 1902! Many other entrepreneurs got started here over time such as Lorenzo Dowling whose grocery store opened up shop HERE IN 1957!!! Today much active entrepreneurism exists within our small community throoutout its various businesses - giving us something extremely unique unto itself !"

In 1916, the first electric lights were lit in Pembroke Pines and the town became one of Florida's first communities to have electricity. By 1938, Pembroke Pines had reached its peak as a resort town with over 3,000 residents. However, during World War II there was a significant decrease in visitors due to the high number of military recruits being drafted into the war. In 1946, after years of growth and development, Pembroke Pines officially became an incorporated city.
