By 1941, Cohn had constructed ninety homes and had plans to add another hundred by 1945. In 1955, Cohn sold his holdings in The Villages to George Weinreb who enlarged it into what is now known as "Pinecrest." In 1966, Weinreb sold his shares in Pinecrest to Gerald Reuther who continued to expand it into today's version of "Pembroke Pines." From its inception until 1986, Pinecrest was managed by Reuther's son-in-law John Fitzgerald who also served as Mayor from 1984 until 1992. Today's incarnation of "Pembroke Pines" began growing rapidly during the late 1990s when developers leased or bought property throughout downtown Miami with plans to create more than 1 million square feet (1006 sq m) of office space within three years. One such development - Cross Roads Towers - was completed in 2001 and immediately became one of South Florida's largest office buildings with over 350 employees occupying over 150 floors*. That same year saw the opening of Park Place Mall which became home to some Of South Florida's most prominent retailers* including Sears & Roebuck*, JCPenney*, Macy’s* etc.* Today Park Place anchors much southern Broward County with its vast indoor open plaza which includes several restaurants/bars/theater* along with several thousand square feet (900 sq m) devoted exclusively toward retail use** [*See sidebar: Park Place Mall]. One important facet that has not changed throughout all these years is the strong social fabric that exists within "Pinecrest". This land had been confiscated from the Seminoles by American forces during the Mexican–American War (1845-48). On December 14th, 1846, Ulysses S. Grant reported that he had acquired 936 square miles (2,923 km²) in south central Florida including Pembroke Pines through his purchase from Spain. The area now known as Clearwater has been annexed by Pinellas County since 1959
