Pembroke Pines is a small town in south-central Florida, United States. It is part of the Palm Beach County area. The population was 5,675 at the 2010 census. The name "pines" comes from an Indian word meaning "hills". The first permanent settler in Pembroke Pines was James A. Payne, who arrived in 1868. Pembroke Pines, Florida was founded on November 12, 1867 by Captain John W. Emory and his family. The town was named for the cluster of Seminole trees near their plantation. The first post office in Pembroke Pines opened on December 1, 1867. The town growth was slow at first due to lack of transportation and goods available to farmers outside of Tampa. However, with the construction of a railroad from Tampa to St Petersburg in 1887, the town started to grow rapidly. In 1915, Pembroke Pines became part of Hillsborough County and experienced its own boom thanks to new housing developments and industry that begangrowing in the area during World War I. After the war ended, many businesses closed down as technology changed and new industries such as manufacturing moved intothe area. However, some long-standing businesses such as Bankers Trust remain in operation today.
