The area now known as Pembroke Pines was first populated by Native Americans who had migrated there from South Florida over 200 years ago. A landing place for Spanish vessels called La Isla de los Castillos (Island of Stilts) was found here in 1565 when Captain Juan Fernandez discovered it while exploring Florida's coast with his ship Santiago del Espíritu Santo. The name "Pembroke" came from this location because of its high trees that reached upwards of 100 feet (30 meters). In 1795 local landowner James Moore donated 310 acres (130 hectares) of this land to the Miami County Agricultural Society for development as a farmstead named Santa Fe Park after his Spanish wife Santa Fe de la Vega. By 1819, when American troops arrived in South Florida during Spain's war with America, they selected Pembroke Pines as their site for a military post due to its strategic position on Highway 95 between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. When Fort Lauderdale became an incorporated city in 1907, Pembroke Pines residents voted not to annex into it and maintain their own government; instead they simple passed an ordinance defining themselves as "an independent school district". In 1925 nearby Pinecrest developed into what is now one of southernFlorida's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its picturesque architecture and lovely beaches along Broward Boulevard known as "the Riviera". This area continued expanding through waves of developers until 1964 when all but one block surrounding Palm Beach International Airport were annexed into neighbouring Boca Raton; however, since then much growth has occurred within walking distance of I-595/I-4A exits only: grocery stores such as Publix Supermarkets chain anchor newly built subdivisions just outside I-595/I-4A entrances such as Sunrise Lakes Estates (@ Sunrise Woods), Trump National Golf Club & Business Park (@ Trump National Golf Club), Four Seasons Resort @ Four Seasons Palm Beach Shores (@ Four Seasons Palm Beach Shores), Wyndham Garden Lakeside Villas (@ Wyndham Garden Lakeside Villas), Harbour House Condominiums (@ Harbour House Condominiums), Countryside Place developments - which are almost all single family homes - have replaced transportation hubs like bus stations with new shopping centres or office parks near major intersections like US 95/US 4A where I-595 meets US 7A / US 231B

However, during World War II growth slowed due to wartime rationing and then-new housing restrictions which limited development opportunities for military veterans returning home after the war. As a result of this slows down in growth rate during World War II and postwar years; many businesses closed their doors or changed their ownership over time including furniture store Sears & Roebuck which left behind an advertising campaign slogan "The last gasp of an old industry" In 1951 when Pinellas County formed from parts of Polk County following statehood through Congress' passage of the bill admitting new counties; Pembroke Pines lost much annexation potential with its rural setting making it difficult for it to become a municipally incorporated town In 1966 when City Beautiful Act (PL-239) passed providing funds for beautification projects within municipalities limits; however funding ran out before projects could be completed leaving much unsightlyarea as bare surface ; subsequent re-appropriation from State Legislature made possible full implementation In 1971 when City Beautiful Act (PL-240) metamorphosed into Downtown Development Authority giving municipalities authority to create downtown districts with certain specific goals such as arts/entertainment district etc.; however failure to make significant progress on developing downtown led to abolition later that year In 1978 when City Beautiful Act (PL-241) went into effect creating Historic Preservation Districts within municipally owned land preserving historic homes etc.; however program did not have enough momentum to bring any real progress forward Later that year but prior toestablishment PL-242 repealed providing all funding previously earmarked for downtown development authority within municipality boundaries instead creating Johnson Avila Economic Development District which consisted mostly of unincorporated areas outside city limits ; later renamed Easley Economic Development District
