Pembroke Pines, Florida is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It was formed in 1871 from parts of Stonington and Winter Haven. Pembroke Pines is located on Lake Wales Boulevard and is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Pembroke Pines were members of the Captain Cook Expedition who passed through the area in 1795-96 while exploringFlorida's eastern coast. In 1821, Colonel James Ewing purchased land near present day State Road 441 east of Stonington for $1,000 cash. The community name "Pemberrooke" originated with this purchase. By 1827, three churches had been organized: First Baptist (founded 1827), Second Baptist (1828), and Methodist Episcopal (1829). In 1870, a post office called "Winterhaven" was established in what is now Polk County; it continued to be used until 1903. In 1871, a post office called "Stonington" was established also in what is now Polk County; it continued to be used until 1907. The first school in Pemberrooke were two teachers' homes which opened on October 14th 1861 named after Major General Andrew Jackson Davis and Mrs Sarah Ingalls Smith Davis Sr.. On February 3rd 1901 Joplin tornado touched down just west of town destroying most everything within 10 miles including 2 schools - one that stood still & another that went up into flames! A young couple saw it coming from their home about 100 yards away when it hit twigs snapping as if someone had turned a lightswitch! That tornado killed 34 people total & injured over 350 more then just property damage alone!
