The first Europeans to visit what is now Pembroke Pines were Spanish explorers who named it San Pedro de la Selva after a saint in Spain. They found only wild hogs and deer there and did not explore further. In 1836, J.D. Bogan founded Bogan's Store at what is now US-91 south of town on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. He built two stores - one with a log cabin and another with a frame building later known as the Bank of America Building - which remain extant today as part of the downtown core of Pembroke Pines. In 1839, Jno Atherton platted sections 6 and 7 along Old State Road (now US-441) near present day intersection of SR-191/SR-192 in what is now eastern Polk County; these sections are also still extant as part of downtown core of Pembroke Pines today. Bryan Stroud founded Stroud's General Store in 1875 on Park Avenue north side where he built both his original store building and an annex that still stands today (the annex survives as partof the City Hall complex). Mr. Stroud operated his store until 1903 when he sold it to Wm Hickey Jr., who continued to operate it until 1951 when it was taken over by Maynard Quigley's Quigley Drugstore chain which remains active today (the current building replaced an older structure that was destroyed by fire in 1978). On October 15, 1907 during Hurricane Andrew*, Jenkins Air Force Base used its newly constructed airport for emergency landing operations providing fuel for propellers needed for search and rescue efforts following Hurricane Andrew*. The airport continues service to this day*! After years off the grid due primarily to hurricanes, Colonial Williamsburg reopened its doors on November 6th, 2009 after being closed for many years due to damage caused by Hurricane Ivan*.
