Pembroke Pines, Florida is a small town located in thecentral Pinellas County, Florida, United States. It consists of only about 8,000 people and has no incorporated municipality. The name comes from the nearby Pines of Pineland National Forest. The first settlers in what is now Pembroke Pines were white men who moved there from neighboring Sarasota County in 1846. At that time, it was part of the Seminole Nation and its government was conducted through religious ceremonies and councils led by chiefs. In 1868, after Florida became a state, the town was established as a county seat with Jepson as its first mayor. Today's population is about 8,000 people who live mostly within the unincorporated villages of Avenida de las Americas (northwest), Plaza de la Uva (southwest), Playa Vista (southeast), and Coral Gables (south). Except for a few scattered residences on Stonington Road near downtown, all of the town's buildings are clustered around two shopping centers – one on Avenida de las Americas and one at corner of Stonington Road and Boca Raton Boulevard. The earliest inhabitants lived mainly within two square miles around present-day Avenida de las Americas; these were soon followed by settlers living further west on Boca Raton Boulevard across Sandy Springs Way; then eastward along Gulfstream Avenue to Sunrise Drive where they began to build their homes more complexly starting in earnest about 1900. By 1915 much of this area had been developed into single-family homes with garage spaces or outbuildings used for agricultural purposes or other commercial uses such as an ice cream parlor called Rolle's Creamery which still stands today on Sunrise Drive near Interstate 95 southbound exit 6A
