Pembroke Pines is a census-designated place in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Pembroke Pines was founded in 1892 by Cornelius Vanderbilt and his wife Sarah Snively. It is located on the left bank of the St. Johns River. The area now comprising Pembroke Pines was first inhabited by Paleo-Indian groups of hunters and gatherers who hunted small game such as opossums and squirrels along the waterways that ran through their territory. The first European to visit what is now Pembroke Pines was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1568, when he charted an route from Pensacola to Tampa Bay. In 1614 Englishman John Hawkins discovered the mouth of the St. Johns River and named it Hawkins Gulf after him on his way back from finding Florida's key colony at Port Royal in Jamaica (now Antigua). On July 4, 1892, Vanderbilt purchased 2,000 acres (10 hectares) of land just south of present-day Pembroke Pines from J.C. Williamson for $1 million U.S., making it one of Jacksonville's most valuable real estate acquisitions ever made at that time; only two years earlier Vanderbilt had lost his fortune in a railroad wreck near Jacksonville while vacationing with his family on Islwyn Island off Cape Canaveral Peninsula; sadly no trace remains today of this once magnificent home still standing on its original acreage north of I-4 east of downtown Jacksonville—a victim not only of our fast-paced society but also Hurricane illiteracy which continues unabated to this day! Vanderbilt quickly began building what would become known as "the White House" – a Palladian Revival styled mansion designed by architect George Washington Stephenson – soon followed by other mansions including one called "Evelyn". By 1904 he had married Martha Gadsden and moved into "Evelyn", becoming America's 20th president; during his term (1901–1909) some 9% or more all exports coming into Jacksonville were handled through "Evelyn". He also financed construction beginning in 1909–1910 of what would become known as Veterans Memorial Field Park northwest side downtown Jeepersontown Road between Interstate 95/Avenida de la Plata Boulevard NE and I-95/Avenida US 27 NW corner which became an oasis for peaceful citizens mourning World War II veterans killed or missing in action over there between 1945 until handover to civilian government following hostilities ceased late 1945 Following President Clinton’s reopening last November 11th marked significant occasion nationally as Presidents George W Bush 43rd & 44th visited Plantation State Park Preserve (& adjacent Preserve near Plantation Point Marina) within walking distance both properties being open daily 8am thru 5pm year round except Christmas Day & New Year’s Day Federal holidays
