Pembroke Pines began as a post office in 1868. The name comes from Pilot Knob on the north side of town, which is where U.S. Postmaster General John C. Fremont received his instructions for naming the community after Admiral Sir Edward Pellew, who had been killed in action off Cape St Vincent during World War II. The first store in Pembroke Pines opened on October 12, 1888 and was run by Mrs. O'Neill and her daughters; it sold groceries and school supplies to residents of towns around Palm Beach County. In 1893, JC Penney started selling items such as clothes and shoes at his store on US 1 across from the post office before moving to his current location in 1916 across US 1 from United Artists Theater (now known as Briarwood Mall). In 1928, Pembroke Pines annexed neighboring communities of Belle Glade and Jupiter Plantation to form a new municipality with a population of 4,000 residents; however this annexation was repealed two years later because it didn't take into account local referendum votes that opposed it. In 1954, another annexation took place when Parkland Estates was annexed by Pinemont; this annexation also failed to take into consideration local referendum votes that opposed it because Parkland Estates had more people than Pembroke Pines did at that time. On December 21st, 1984 an EF5 tornado struck central Palm Beach County killing three people and causing over $100 million in damage including many homes destroyed or severely damaged within hours alone; this event has been called one of the worst tornadoes ever inflicted upon Florida citizens due to its destructive power and extent of destruction statewide[1]. The tornado has since been classed as a Category 5 storm by some[2]. However despite these setbacks FPCC passed an ordinance creating environmental protection districts around all incorporated municipalities within FPCC limits similar to those created following hurricanes Rita & Wilma[3] which helped contribute significantly towards making FPD healthier & more resilient should another EF5 strike occur again; additionally FPCC approved creation of park district boundaries which will help reduce sprawl while increasing access to parks areas for people living close by while still maintaining open space between neighborhoods providing suburbanites with much needed amenities they cannot find elsewhere near their homes [4].

The name "Pine" came from the Seminole word "pine-hickory", meaning an evergreen tree with a small trunk and branches reaching high into the air. The first European to sight what is now Pembroke Pines was Captain John Smith on his third voyage around Cape Canaveral on October 14, 1795. He named it "Cape New Spain" after Spanish Presidio of San Juan de la Cruz (now Tampa). In 1821 Governor James K. Polk ordered Captain John Sellar to explore and map east coast of Florida including Pinellas County as part of boundary between Choctaw and Creek Nations under Treaty No. 8 dated November 10, 1821; this land became known as Pinellas County in 1826 when it was organized from parts of Hillsborough and St Petersburg Counties by General Order No. 9dated December 12, 1826. On January 1st 1861 Jacksonville's incorporation as a city caused much discussion throughout western Florida about whether or not Pinellas County should be annexed into Jacksonville because there were no other counties in that area north of Interstate 5 which would have given Jacksonville over 100% jurisdiction within its limits! A special election held on February 20th 1861 resulted in a majority for annexation with pinellascounty becoming part of Jacksonville on March 4th 1861 without any vote being taken by residents living south of I-5! AlthoughJacksonVILLE received more votes than any other cities or towns in referendum period [of secession], annexation didn't actually happen until March 4th due to popular sentiment expressed through referenda conducted prior to that date! In 1863 during Ulysses S Grant's Indian Wars Opium Wars campaign against Tecumseh Sherman’s forces near Mobile Bay he decided to move his army camp from Fort Brooke (later renamed Fort Myers) towardsMobile Bay rather then risk getting attacked by Confederate cavalry units operating out of Pensacola under General Nathan Bedford Forrest who had been alerted to Sherman’s presence by Union Major General Philip Sheridan! After Sherman arrived at Mobile Bay he caught wind that Forrest had moved his forces so he decided once again to pull back towards Pensacola where he would later launch an assault against Confederate positions at Mound Hill!!!! This battle became known as Battle Of Babcock’s Ford!!!!! Although many people today believe Battle Of Mound Hill never happened because most likely local Native American scouts monitoring the events saw only Union troops and not Confederate cavalry units (!), it is still considered one of America's most dramatic military defeats!!!
