In 1868, Issaquah A. Smith and his brother, Augustus, opened a mercantile store in Pembroke Pines. They continued to operate the store until 1902 when they sold it to J.W. Brownell and Sons. The business continued as J.W. Brownell & Sons binoculars until the end of 1957 when it was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Julius Kappelmeyer of Gainesville, Florida who operated it until 1985 when it was donated to Pembroke Pines Museum of History and Art where it is currently on display
Pembroke Pines is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,661 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pembroke Pines began as a post office called "Pinecrest" on January 20, 1892. The name change was due to an act of Congress which granted land to the town in lieu of cash bounties paid by Confederate soldiers who had deserted during the American Civil War. As a result of its early growth and economic significance, Pembroke Pines has been nicknamed "The City That Cried." The first school in Pembroke Pines was built in 1893 and became known as Pinecrest Colored School. In 1907, a new white school building was built for the town's black students and became known as Booker T Washington High School. The original high school building still stands today and is used as a community center. A new elementary school was built for the town's children in 1958 and became known as Heritage Elementary School; it remains operational today. In 1965, storm surges from Hurricane Georges caused extensive damage to both schools; Heritage reopened later that year but suffered from continued neglect until 1998 when renovation project brought about significant improvements including new roofs and replacement windows throughout the building thanks to support from local businesses. In 2006, construction began on what would become America's second largest shopping mall; Twelve Flags Florida World Mall will be located adjacent to Heritage Elementary School across I-4 from downtown Pembroke Pines with all major stores except Sears/Kmart closed down during construction while also opening up into two levels with an additional 1 million square feet (900,000 m²) of floor space total on three different levels underground making it one of America's largest retail complexes ever constructed with anchor stores like Macy's and Sears being relocated outdoors onto several acres adjacent to Interstate 4 just south of where America's biggest amusement park will sit when completed – Project Mockingbird! When completed this project will bring jobs directly into downtown area creating much needed tax revenue for infrastructure projects within our city . A number of restaurants have also opened up around Town Center over time such as Jamba Juice locations near Barnes & Noble Books & Music Store (now Macy’s) back thenNextel phone store across I-4 now Piperlime Refreshments before eventually closing down or going out OF BUSINESS altogether over time! All told there are now more than 35 restaurants serving food inside Twelve Flags Florida World Mall!!! This brings us right up against another issue we face everyday here in our city – how do we maintain these businesses????!! We must remember that they provide employment which helps keep our economy swinging positive not only locally but also statewide or we risk becoming another failed municipality like Clearwater Beach which lost almost half its residents within 10 years due to lack of business development….. So please help make sure that Twelve FlagsFloridaWorldMall stays open & thriving thru increased marketing investment thru event sponsorship / naming rights etc…. Thank you so much for your attention
