By 1928, there were 10 businesses in the community and 100 people living there. The first post office opened in 1929 and remained open until 1974. In 1930, an unsuccessful attempt was made by developers to build a resort on the north side of Inverness Road adjacent to where present day Interstate 4 would cross it some time later. However, this did not stop development at Pembroke Pines; within two years another $5 million had been poured into infrastructure projects including roads, bridges and water systems. The original homes that dot today's streets were constructed during World War II for workers who built runways for the Air Force Base at Miramar and other military installations around Northeast Miami-Dade County. Many of these homes still stand today - many are used as vacation rentals or as museum exhibits highlighting local history. Pembroke Pines also became known for its golf courses which remain one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area today - with over 175 holes available across six different layouts (67% public) making it one of America’s most extensive golf communities (see list below).
