Pembroke Pines, Florida is a small town located in Citrus County, Florida. The population was 6,811 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the term "pines," which are trees that grow near water. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2 km²), all of it land. The first permanent settler in Pembroke Pines was John Fenton who built a log cabin on what is now US-1 on November 15, 1839. Fenton named his cabin Pinecrest because he had seen pine trees growing near Clearwater Creek. In 1842, Arent Keyes settled in Pembroke Pines and operated a drove making flour for Tampaans and shipping goods out to Mobile Bay via Pensacola Bayou and then to St Petersburg by means of Whatcom River where he stored his flour until 1851 when he sold out and moved to Jacksonville, FL. In 1865 Drury bought 2,000 acres (800 ha) adjacent to what is now the downtown core of Pembroke Pines from Elisha Kane for $5 per acre ($40 per ha). By 1880 there were over 100 homes in town with an average size of 3 ½ stories high and 25 rooms wide with electricity available only through an overhead line strung between two power poles across Main Street east of town center
Pembroke Pines is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,801 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now comprising Pembroke Pines and its predecessor communities were settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the early 19th century as part of what is today known as the "Scotch Plains" region around St. Petersburg. The first post office in Pembroke Pines was established on December 12, 1851, and remained open until it was discontinued on March 15, 1852. The original town site lay along present day Hillsborough Boulevard between Tampa's north side and Clearwater Beach's south side. The settlement that would become Pembroke Pines began to form several years later when Captain John Fenton organized a group of men to purchase land from Apalachicola Indians for $1 per acre (and paid with goods they had captured). This initial purchase included 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of present-day US 79/Tampa Bay Road and 2 acres (8 ha) of land east of present-day Hillsborough Boulevard between US 192 and just past Lake Wales Drive on the bay side. Fenton named his new community after King George III who he believed had helped him during his military service in India while serving as an officer with the British East India Company some time prior to 1819. At first all but one family lived on this initial land grant which included much of what now comprises downtown Pinellas County; only about 20 homes actually stands today within the limits originally allotted to Fentontowne circa 1800s E official records reflect that most residents moved away by 1860 due largely to pine beetle infestations throughout much of their area which caused extensive tree death including many large palms trees located near where Gandy Street intersects US 79 today). A few remaining Fentontownians remain intermarried with other pioneer families living nearby such as those from Clearwater Beach who also purchased adjacent parcels totaling 3 square miles or . Today streets called Highland Avenue (now Gulfport Avenue) and Spring Garden Place carry these family name remnants into modern times still visible even though most house demolition has taken place since then primarily focusing development closer to Interstate 495/Hillsborough Boulevard intersection creating an almost continuous highrise skyline view stretching northeastward across downtown Pinellas County bisected by I-495 highway…the dominant landscape type remaining today despite major urban sprawl taking place over recent decades……………..
