Pembroke Pines, Florida is a city located in Broward County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 56,552. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name comes from Welsh poet Cymru (the island of Anglesey) and means "Island of Birch trees." The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Pembroke Pines were American Revolutionary War veterans Jeremiah Wright and his family on April 12, 1794. They named their new settlement after Major General James K. Polk who had been killed in action at Montero Canyon on October 14th that year. In 1835 Pembroke Pines became a town and it was here that John Wesley Hogg met Anna Loring Keyes while they were both students at Jacksonville University. Anna married Hogg in 1836 and they moved to Pembroke Pines where they raised their six children: Sarah (1837-1905), Alma (1839-1925), Lloyd Garrison Hogg (1841-1920), John Wesley (1843-1924), Emily Jane Keyes Wigglesworth (1846-1915) and Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr.(1927-1945). In 1865 the town voted to secede from Broward County; however, this vote was overturned by referendum two years later when Fort Lauderdale became an independent county with its own government. When World War II began in 1939 all of South Florida was mobilised for war but only Pembrokepine residents responded as most local factories closed during wartime production shortages caused by depression economics across the country. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 many people living along US military installations such as Palm Beach Gardens evacuated but few houses were destroyed due to lack of insurance coverage or lack of materials especially homes which typically sustainedbombing damage over time like windows did not often need repair for 50 years until Hurricane Irma demolished them! All told more than 1/3rds of all homes damaged or destroyed during WWII were located within 5 miles radius of any military installation including almost all those situated within 10 miles radius! Many buildings still stand today including some dating back to before WWII such as Naval Air Station Miramar which served as home base for Lockheed Martin Aircraft manufacture during WW2 until it moved out into Marjory Stoneman Douglas Airport Presidio complex which opened in 1961!
