The town of Parkland was founded in 1868 by Captain Fenton Keyes and his wife Lucy Keyes. They named their new community after Andrew Jackson Poole who had been killed during the American Civil War two years earlier. At that time Polk County was split into two parts: Jacksonville to the east and Stoneman Douglas to the west. Captain Keyes decided to move his business from Jacksonville to Parkland so that he could continue exporting sugarcane from his plantation there. In 1872, he sold his plantation to Waddell & Moody who renamed it Clearwater Rancho de la Hacienda de la Luz y el Caballo Blanca (PARKLAND Rancho La Hacienda Blanca). The first post office in Parkland opened in 1870. By 1880, when prohibition began effective in America, many cattle drives brought Mexican herders into Polk County for milk production–the first time this area had ever seen such an influx of people or animals!
