Parkland, Florida is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 18,604 at the 2010 census. Parkland is one of two cities in Broward County and itsMayor is Rick Singer. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Parkland were Spanish traders and missionaries in 1663 who named it "Isla de la Concepción" after their mother's maiden name. In 1795, American Revolutionary War general George Washington passed through the area on his way from Havana to Pensacola. On July 20th of that year, General Washington's forces burned Fort Lauderdale near present-day Parkland before moving on to Fort Brooke on Jupiter Island which they took over using force the next day. The townsite was organized as a municipality by Act No. 5 of 1907 and named for Colonel James Ewing (1811-1896), an early settler who donated land for parks and schools in southeastern Broward County including today's Everglades National Park. The city limits were extended eastward along Northwest Highway (US 1) until 1938 when they again reverted back to their original boundaries; this time extending east along South Orange Drive (SR 528). In 1939, annexation of neighbouring unincorporated territory resulted in another name change: Coconut Creek City Council became Parkside City Council effective September 1st that year after merging with Coconut Creek Municipal Airport which had been operational since 1928 as Key Biscayne Municipal Airport #1; both municipalities are still extant today with a combined population of approximately 509 residents according to the 2010 Census count – making them adjacent but distinct cities within Broward County proper despite having different namesakes! Ibid However annexation did not stop there; Riverwalk City Council also merged into Parkside effective 1959 due to overlapping jurisdictions encompassing both municipalities' waterfront areas between Sawgrass Beach Boulevard running inland from US 1 just outside their respective city limits towards Sunrise/Key Largo International Airport while Riverwalk operated outlying airport taxi cab terminals servicing Coral Gables thoroughfare north and west beyond those jurisdiction boundaries - effectively giving river walkers complete control over all beach access points within city limits Tracey Aikenhead & Noel Kingsbury

Parkland High School closed its doors in 2009 and now offers classes through the nearby Lake Worth Christian Academy. In 2018, it was announced that Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School would be the new home for Parkland's only middle school after their closure in 2009. The building opened in May 2019 and provides education for students from grades 7-12. Parkland also has a playground and an amphitheater which are both used to host events such as basketball games or concerts.
In the early 1800s, Parkland was a small community near Naples. The area now includes the city of Broward and portions of unincorporated Pinellas County. In 1827, Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Parkland and began to cultivate land. A school was established in 1829, and another in 1835. By 1840, there were about 100 people living in Parkland. The first courthouse was built in 1851. In 1861, a plantation called "Baldwin" was acquired by J.P. Morgan and his associates for $1 million dollars. They soon abandoned it because of its inhospitable climate and lack of resources. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Easley surrendered at Appomattox Court House after a three-week battle on April 9th that ended the American Civil War. In 1870, Union General Ulysses S Grant occupied Fort Brooke on Biscayne Bay while he besieged Petersburg during the American Civil War. On October 12th of that year, Union forces burned down Baldwin Plantation which had been used as an observation post by Confederate forces during the fighting After the war ended in 1865, many white landowners who had not participated in the fighting sold their lands to freedmen or Native Americans for cash or goods
