Parkland, Florida is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,433 at the 2010 census. Parkland was incorporated on February 17, 1925. It is named for Confederate General James Troup Parkland. The town of Parkland was founded by developers in 1925 as part of a master plan to create an all-purpose community with easy access to Interstate 95 and other freeways. The townsite had been surveyed by Ephraim Hennenmeyer and his son John Hennenmeyer, both natives of Germany who immigrated to the United States in 1881. The name "Parkland" was chosen based on its location at the intersection of two major north-south routes; it could be seen as an oasis between Miami and Fort Lauderdale on one side and Coral Springs on the other. The first development in Parkland occurred around 1928 when developer Wernher Lohse purchased land northeast of downtown for $10 per acre (the equivalent of $ today). A variety of businesses were established during this time including a grocery store, post office, hotel/motel, auto dealership and agricultural complex known as the Farmington Hills Farms tract home plantation near Sunrise Highway and Heritage Boulevard. In 1933 Wernher Lohse sold his holdings to developer Milton Bradley which changed its name to Sun Ray Corporation in 1935 after settling some patents filed by Bradley related to artificial lightbulbs that would soon become household staples throughout North America. In 1941 Sun Ray merged with American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) creating what is now Nortel Communications Incorporated. During World War II Sun Ray developed military chemical munitions production plants at Plant #1 in Sumter County while Plant #2 produced radar components at Clearwater Beach Naval Air Station off Jupiter Road (now US shores). After the war SunRay divested itself of military chemicals production contracts but continued sales operations for civilians under new names such as Allied Signal Corporation until 1984 when it merged with Lucent Technologies plc.- forming Alcatel-Lucent Incorporated today In 1955 Mayor Harry Crenshaw created a city commission which designed plans for what would eventually become downtown Parkland bounded by Northwest Third Street on the east; Northwest Fourth Street on the west; Northeast First Avenue on the south; Northeast Second Avenue on the north; South Lake Drive between Southwest Eighth Street and Southeast Tenth Street - Plan No 2 or Central Business District plan - This plan called for Town Center Boulevard running along central park boundaries from Northwest Third Street northwest through Northeast First Avenue east then southwest through Southeast TenthStreet south then northeast back out onto Central Business District property line where it turns east again into Town Center Boulevard terminating at Northwest ThirdStreet within City limits . Downtown business districts were ultimately not implemented due primarily to financial limitationsrather than any deficiencies within their designations In 1961 Mayor Harry Crenshaw recommended that Downtown Park land be annexed into Miami Lakes instead due largely to concerns about potential traffic congestion caused by increasing popularity among residents outside those borders . However annexation never happened because Miami Lakes chose instead to annex Dadeland Ranch subdivision located just east of Broward County line
On March 14, 1998, Parkland Elementary School was bombed by a homemade bomb. The school's staff and students were injured but all survived.
