Parkland, Florida is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. Parkland is home to Saint David's Episcopal Church and Parkland High School which are both public schools. The first settlers of what is now Parkland were Methodists who arrived in 1794. In 1868, a post office called Parkland was established and remained in operation until 1951. The first school in Parkland was founded in 1865 by parents of students from Miami Beach Elementary School. The school closed on October 15th, 1942 due to World War II war production shortages. A new school was built at 601 Northwest First Street for students from Miami Beach and Everglades City Schools. It opened on November 1st, 1942 and remained open until it too closed due to budget deficits in 1973-1974; it had been Cutrer Middle School before that. In 1952, the current high school building was completed and named after Driscoll MacLeod who served as Superintendent of Education for Miami-Dade County from 1922-1948 In 1984, South Alabama Technical College relocated to its current location on Southwest Fourth Street in Parkland thanks to a state voucher program which gave tuition free to residents of low income families with children under 24 months old attending participating colleges or universities regardless of their academic level or English language abilities

This trend accelerated following the collapse of several major companies in South Florida during the early 1990s. As result, crime rates have declined significantly since then but still remain high relative to other urban areas in South Florida.
