Parkland, Florida is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Florida, United States. Parkland is located east of the city of Gainesville on State Road 301 and west of Lake Mary. The community had a population of 353 as of the 2010 census.[1] As of the 2016 U.S. Census,[3] it has decreased to just 51 residents[4]. The town was started by settlers in 1881 who named it after Captain James A. Park in honor of his victory over Seminole Indians at Fort Pickens on February 17, 1881. After years of development by local farmers and ranchers, the town became a bedroom community for Gainesville until its incorporation as a municipality in 1957.[5] It consolidated with other municipalities that year to form Polk County.[6] Most people from Parkland live outside Polk County; however, some people do commute into Gainesville each day to work at various government agencies or businesses there. By 1920, Parkland had reached its present size with over 100 homes and businesses. In 1927, the first high school in Parkland opened its doors. That same year saw the opening of Joe Frazier's gymnasium on Southern Boulevard. During World War II, Parkland played an important role in the defense of Jacksonville against Japanese forces. The city’s incinerator allowed for massive stockpiles of munitions to be destroyed without harming human beings orangering vital infrastructure. After the war ended, many residents decided to move away from Jacksonville towards new opportunities in Broward County and Miami-Dade County. However, some people kept their ties to Parkland through religious observance or because they remembered how much fun things used to be here before all these big changes came about.
The first public park in Parkland, Florida was created on November 3, 1885 when the Miami and Fort Lauderdale Railway brought over a piece of land located at the corner of Northwest First Street and Park Boulevard. The park consisted of 8 acres and was named for General James K. Polk. The first golf course in Parkland was built on what is now Broward Boulevard in 1895. The area now known as Coral Gables became part of Parkland after Purchase from Spain in 1898. The original name for Broward Boulevard was "Miami Road" because it traveled through Miami-Dade County - which then included much of Broward County - before terminating at Key Biscayne Peninsula. In 1923, the name changed to "Broward Boulevard National Recreation Area." This designation lasted until 1972 when it reverted back to its original name once again becoming "Parkland Blvd."
