In response to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida on February 14, 2018, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida National Guard were dispatched to the school. The sheriff’s office stated that they had been called “multiple times” in connection with the shooting. A total of 17 people were killed and 17 more injured when a gunman opened fire at the school. This tragedy has left many Floridians shaken and grieving. The Parkland community is home to over 22,000 residents and it is one of the most diverse communities in Broward County. There are a variety of cultures represented in this community, including Jewish, Muslim, Hispanic, African-American and LGBTQ+ groups. This diversity makes it difficult for any one person or group to become involved in what happened on February 14th. However, through education and activism, Parkland has shown that they are willing to come together as a community and fight for their rights. One of the most important aspects of Parkland was their youth leadership program known as “March for Our Lives” which took place on March 14th from 9am-12pm inside of Fort Lauderdale Stadium. This program was designed to bring together local high school students with national leaders from various organizations who would talk about how they can work together towards solutions to gun violence in America. This event showed that Parkland is not just a town located in Florida; they are also passionate about making sure their voice is heard throughout America.

One of the first settlers in Parkland was Captain John Smith who built a log cabin on what is now Northwest corner of FM 495 and US 192 in 1824. In 1828, Captain Smith's grandson, James Fenton, purchased 1/4 acre of land at Northeast corner of FM 495 and US 192. In 1840, Fenton sold his land to Major General Andrew Jackson for $5,000. The Jackson family continued to own and maintain the property until it was given away to the state in 1959 by Governor George C. Wallace as part of the White House Estate giveaway program. Today, much of Parkland is occupied by State College University which was originally established in 1907 as Broward County Agricultural Institute. After World War II, South Florida's largest university became an important factor in Hispanic education and community development throughout Broward County. Today South Florida's largest university provides world-class educational opportunities for students from all over South Florida through its eight campuses located throughout Broward County including two main campuses: Coral Gables and Fort Lauderdale . While there has been great progress made both domestically and abroad during our school years here at South Florida's largest university - most notably during our current administration led by Dr. Katherine Harris - many challenges still remain that need to be addressed if we are going to thrive into the future as one cohesive community across all cultures and religions!
