Parkland, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, about 30 miles east of Tampa. The population was 3,386 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. Parkland was founded in 1835 and became a town on February 14, 1907. The University of South Florida (USF) campus lies just outside of Parkland proper and includes many buildings from the old USF campus which were destroyed by fire in 1964. The main street that runs through Parkland is USF Street which falls within the boundaries of nearby North Hillsborough Community College (NHCC). NHCC also has its own campus adjacent to USF Campus and it shares some facilities with USF's School of Veterinary Medicine. The townsite contains two recreation areas; one - called "Lake Wales" - nears Lake Seminole while the other - called "Southside" - is located on mostly agricultural land bordered by Kissimmee Creek to the south and southwest. Many businesses are concentrated along Interstates 35E and 192, such as gas stations, convenience stores, motels etc., making it an attractive location for shopping or dining as well as recreational activities like swimming or fishing. One downside to this concentration may be that access to various amenities can be difficult if not impossible to find from most parts of town; though this has generally been less an issue during recent years when traffic congestion has become increasingly common throughout much of Tampa Bay due to continued growth in eastern Pinellas County into which Parkland borders.

The town refined its economy through fishing, agriculture, and timber production. In 1914 the townsite became part of Lake County when that area was merged with Miami-Dade County. The region around Parkland experienced significant economic growth during World War II. With the discovery of oil in 1947 and later gas discoveries, Parkland became one of the most prosperous areas in Southwest Florida. But by 1970s there were signs of decline as technological advances replaced traditional industries in many parts of Tampa Bay Area. In 1993 Parkland borders Clearwater into which it seceded to become an independent city. However recent allegations that some members of Mayor Rick Kriseman's administration engaged in corruption have led to his ouster from office; this has caused yet another downturn for Parkland's economy which is now facing numerous challenges including increased crime rates and budget deficits
In February of 1775, the first shots were fired in what is now Parkland, Florida. The War of 1812 began two months later and by May 12th, a group of Seminole Indians had invaded Florida. This event would become known as the Battle of Taliaferro Fields. On July 3rd, 1813, General Andrew Jackson's army arrived in Florida and skirmishes ensued between the American and Seminole forces. By September 6th, 1813, the battle was over and 25 Americans were killed and 170 Seminoles were killed or captured.
