In 1761, Congress authorized Plantation Key on Biscayne Bay for James Kapp and his wife Elizabeth who were then living near Fort Lauderdale on Key West Peninsula. Kapp donated land for Stonington Church on Dania Beach Boulevard today's Hospital Drive and two other parcels for a schoolhouse and graveyard today's Naugatuck Road (Old US 1). In 1854 Drury ran into difficulties with Chiavelli about creating a road from Naples down key so he decided instead to build a canal through what is now known as Midway Avenue/Key Highlands Drive which he named Canal Key after himself! After many years of effort by Drury's heirs, construction began on State Road 10A (now US 1) across Canalside from Drury's home on November 3 1926 when Governor Cripps designated this road as State Road 10A just prior to its designation as Interstate 95 south of Homestead Speedway some miles east of I-95 exit #57 near Ft Myers Airport! A few years later State Road 10A became US 1 when it was re-designated as such following completion of I-95 expansion southward along I-95 from Homestead Speedway eastward into Collier County including much of today’s Sunrise Valley Offshore Environmental Preserve while also including most portions of South Miami Lakes Golf Course beginning at mile marker 239 (just past milepost 240 obliterated by I-395), current day NE 8th Street/SR 724 & SR 441 SW before concluding at NW 11th Avenue/SR 904 just inside present day Miami border

In 1827, Jonas Salk developed a vaccine against smallpox at his laboratory on University Avenue in Miami Beach. Today's Salk Museum is dedicated to his life and work. By 1830, citrus crops were being grown in Parkland County for local consumption and export to Cuba and other parts of Latin America. In 1835, Anna Maria Hernandez built the first white house in Broward County when she moved from Havana to live near her brother-in-law's plantation there. That same year saw another major development when railroad magnate Andrew Mellon donated land to fund a canal through Broward County that would connect Tampa with Miami Harbor. This project became known as the Everglades Project and it remains one of South Florida's most controversial issues today! In 1861, Jacksonville seceded from Florida due to its disagreements over secessionism and joined Confederate States of America (CSA). On January 8thof that year, Confederate General Braxton Bragg laid siege to Fort Sumter within Jacksonville before retreating two days later afterHeavy rains caused powder magazine explosions inside the fort which destroyed much ofBragg's army! However, many Floridians sided with their southern counterparts during this time period and many businesses closed their doors support CSA ideology!
