However, by 1930 this prosperity had waned and the population had decreased to just 12 residents; by 1940 there were only 2 residents remaining in the city limits. During World War II much activity took place within Broward County due to military service; however, little attention was paid to Parkland aside from occasional visits by dignitaries or protests against war policy from local citizens. After World War II came an era of rapid growth for Parkland as many new businesses opened up including Amoco refinery (later Phillips Petroleum), Atlantic Aviation plant (later Lockheed Martin), and Fort Lauderdale Hospital (now Memorial Hospital). However again this growth did not last long as during the 1950s Parkway Shopping Center opened up next door reducing competition for retail space; by 1970 there were only 3 retailers left in town while most shops had closed or relocated elsewheredue to inflationary pressures brought on by suburbanization throughout South Florida
