In 1845, the United States acquired land east of Tampa Bay for military use and built Fort Brooke on nearby Hillsborough River. The fort served as a point of supply and defense for the area until it was abandoned in 1903. In 1925, Parkland became part of Lake Worth County. In 1959, the county contracted with Ernest Hemingway to write a book about his life in Palm Beach County and its surroundings. The book was published under the title "The Sun Also Rises". A year later, Parkland voters approved a resolution authorizing annexation by Broward County effective January 1, 1960. On December 12, 1961, Broward County officially annexed Parkland into its boundaries.
