In 1907, Congress created Floridas National Forest along with 17 other national forests across the country after it was discovered that much valuable timber had been cut down in neighboring Alabama and Georgia during the previous decade. The parklands were designated as part of this forest by virtue of their location within its boundaries On January 16th, 1923 President Calvin Coolidge signed Executive Order No. 5694 which directed all public agencies including state governments to provide grants to various organizations who would then create parks throughout FloridasPanama Bayou State Park alone received 1 million dollars from Congressmen Alben Barkley and James Lecompton Jr., both from Mississippi respectively Parkland became one hundred percentowned by local citizens on May 25th 1930 when City Councilman Harry Sizemore donated 2 acres for use as a golf course In 1944 Korean War veteran Cpl Kenzie Flowers donated 6 acres north-east of Main Street to become what is now known as Memorial Park
In 1817, the area that is now Parkland was part of the Florida Territory. The first white person to live in what is now Parkland was Captain John Smith, who explored and surveyed the area in 1794. The first mention of a school in what is now Parkland was in 1837 when Capt. James Houstoun built a cabin on land that later became known as Old Fort Moultrie. In 1850, the General Assembly passed an act which created Broward County and gave it to Lauderdale County east of Pompano Beach. Parkland started out as just a few small parcels of swampy land near Fort Lauderdale. By 1886, there were over 20 lots for sale in Parkland Township, including 10 acres for $1 per acre. It wasn't until 1911 that Parkland had its own post office and began using the name "Park." The original schools in what is now Parkland were called Old Fort Moultrie School and Jupiter Indoor School. In 1937, Broward County added another school - Broward High School - to help support more students in this growing community. Today, there are many different types of schools located throughout ParkLAND - from elementary through high school education!
