In 1952, developer Lamar Hunt purchased 1,200 acres (500 hectares) west of town and constructed two shopping malls: one on Gulf Boulevard and one on Bolton Road near where I-95 meets US-1A today. Hunt also built several homes adjacent to Disney's Walt Disney World Resort across from Plantation Drive east of I-95 between Corporate Boulevard and Palm Beach Gardens Boulevard today known as Magic Kingdom Village; this property became TomorrowLand after its acquisition by Walt Disney World Resort in 1971). In December 2017, gunman Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School before turning the gun on himself following a shoot out with police officers
