Parkland, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Miami metropolitan area. Parkland is located on a peninsula that juts out into Lake Okeechobee and forms part of the border between Miami-Dade County and Seminole County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Parkland were French colonists who set up an outpost in 1763. The town was founded by James Knoppers in 1836 as a plantation colony for his brother John Knoppers after they bought land from the Kissimmee Indian tribe. In 1838, Parkland became part of Miami county and changed its name to Parkland after Major General Simon Bolivar Lamar Landowski (1792–1870), one of the conquerors of Cuba during the Second Mexican War. ranchers heeded Lamar's advice to develop high ground for cattle ranching and farming around three miles (5 km) northeast of town on Seneca Lake. In 1915, Mayor Harry Belcher established Parkland's first post office with mail service from Palm Beach through Largo then east to Key Biscayne and south to Hollywood along Northwest First Street before returning north to downtown ParkLAND via NW Second Street Belcher served two terms as mayor before dying in 1925 . His successor Thompson took over until 1931 when Sam Snead became mayor followed by Mary Pickford Robinson who served until her death in 1964 . During her time as mayor, she sponsored many park improvements including construction of a baseball diamond, swimming pool and scoreboard which are still extant today She also helped found Broward Community College which opened its doors in 1966

However, after a series of devastating shootings at schools in Parkland that left 26 people dead and dozens more injured, residents began to demand stricter gun control laws. The city ultimately voted to become an independent city in 1978 and has since been struggling with economic stability.
