Every day, Parkland, Florida’s students and faculty face the challenges of gun violence. Gun violence in the United States is a critical issue that needs to be addressed. In the days leading up to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s shooting, Parkland community members were mobilized to demand change. They held rallies and educational events in support of gun safety legislation. On Valentine’s Day, students from Parkland took to social mediato express their love for one another and demand change. They called for stricter gun laws and denounce further shootings at schools. Despite all of these efforts, on March 14th an innocent person was killed by a gunman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. This tragedy has galvanized the community into action once again. The school district has announced they will start arming teachers with rifles as a security measure in order to prevent any future shootings like this from happening.

Parkland is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. It was incorporated on January 12, 1892. The population was 12,526 at the 2010 census. The town of Parkland was founded by J.P. Morgan and his son James P. Morgan Jr., who bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land from theBroward County commissioners for $1 million in 1892. They named their new community after John Fenton Parker, an American lawyer and Congressman from Florida who had died in 1890 before he could vote on a bill to create a park in Broward County that would later become Parkland. A post office called Parkland was established in 1893, and remained in operation until it closed on December 15, 1907. In 1933, the name of the town reverted to its original spelling when newly annexed neighboring Fort Lauderdale became incorporated as well and changed its name to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport; however some residents continued to use "Parkland" as their towns name until they were finally forced to change it back to "Fort Lauderdale" by then-Mayor Don Shriver circa 1991 due to legal issues with annexation agreements between both municipalities which did not reflect the original intent of what had been agreed upon when Parkland was formed; Fort Lauderdale being given higher priority due to its proximity to Hollywood Studios while ParkLAND languished behind development plans for much of its early history A courthouse and jail were built in 1912 within walking distance of each other along Ft Worth Avenue north of where I-95 now exits Miami Beach Boulevard; these buildings are now part of Sunrise Hospital Center . The first school building downtown also dates back from this time period - Stonington School which served gradeschool through high school up until 1925 In 1916 a large shopping mall was developed on SW 2nd Street adjacent to Sunrise Hospital Center - this mall is now known as Southside Mall
On November 14, 2017, a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. It was the deadliest school shooting in United States history. At least 17 people were killed and 27 were injured. The shooting has been called the "mass shooting of our generation".
