Parkland, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 17,624 at the 2000 census. Parkland is located on the campus of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. It is also home to South Miami Preparatory School and Miami Dade College. Parkland has been named one of "America's most livable cities" by Forbes magazine in 2017 and 2018. The land that would become Parkland was first settled by African Americans around 1875 as part of what is now Overtown neighborhood on the northwest side of Miami-Dade County. The name for this area came from a local Indian chief named "Paddock". By 1888, white residents had developed this area into what is now Parkland with their homes built on high ground near today's Coral Gables Boulevard and Northwest Seventh Street intersection. In 1895, James Buchanan Polk became President of the United States after winning the election against Democrat Grover Cleveland; he chose to move his presidential residence from New York City to Washington Dade County so he could be closer to Congress which would play an important role in his presidency. In 1896, gas lamps were lighted for the first time in America in Parkland when two men – Wm Averell Harriman and Edwin Halsey – lit them at Oneonta Avenue and Northwest Seventeenth Street corner while they tested new gasoline additives made by John Drake & Sons company near present day Brickell Avenue junction between NW First Avenue and NE Sixth Street intersection during winter months (the experiment failed due to an electric fire). This was only one small step towards American Standard Oil Company electing William McKinley as President in 1901 because it demonstrated how much early 20th century America had changed since fledgling country gained independence from Great Britain some 50 years earlier! In 1907 Jacksonville developer James Goodloe purchased 1/2 mile east of current day SW Third Street corner along Northeast Fourth Avenue for $1 million dollars which would later become known as Goodloe Parkway adjacent to present day University Drive entrance off Interstate 95 southbound approaching Broward Boulevard interchange (now I-95 South). After developing many houses here including several presidential palaces over time such as White House Mews (Presidential Residence #4), Executive Mansion Annexe (Presidential Residence #5) and Treasury Building Annexe (Treasury Building #3) Goodloe Road became Highway No. 6 featuring horse drawn carriages running past mansions along its length until it met its end at I-95 about 4 miles north of where it currently intersects University Drive just south of Everglades National Wildlife Refuge boundary line approximately 8 miles southeast from downtown Miami proper! On November 14th, 1995 gunfire erupted inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School building killing 14 students and three teachers before gunman Nikolas Cruz ran out onto campus with his AR-15 rifle malfunctioning resulting in him shooting himself dead inside school’s lone gymnasium leaving behind grieving families across America who have continued up through every political iteration since then demanding action From Congress As Well As Every Law enforcement agency operating within our borders! For all we've lost here let us never forget why we're fighting!
