The community grew rapidly due to its location on Broward Boulevard, which connected Miami and Fort Lauderdale. In 1966, Parkland incorporated as a village. The population was 10,000 at the 2000 census. It experienced rapid growth following the September 11th attacks of 2001; the population increased to 15,000 by 2006 and 30,000 by 2011. On February 14th 2018 school children in Parkland killed 17 people with an AR-15 rifle during a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

However, recent years have seen some decline in these industries while others have thrived such as Stonington University which has returned to its former glory as one of America's top schools.
In 1922, the Parkland Board of Education voted to create Parkland High School. In 1923, the school’s first building was erected. In 1924, a new gymnasium was built and in 1928, an auditorium was added. In 1932, a science wing was added and in 1938, a library was built. The school opened its doors to students on September 9th of that year. On February 14th of 1959, Parkland Junior college became part of the system and on May 7th of 1969 Southeast Florida State College became part of the system as well. On July 1st 1955, Parkland Junior college merged with Stonington Memorial Magnet School which had been established in 1949 by Mrs. Hilda Ziegler-Nelson with support from Congressman James Buchanan III On November 15th 1978, after more than fifty years at the helm - during which time Parkland High School has seen many changes including expansions into other campuses - Mrs. Parker stepped down as Superintendent effective December 31st 1978 and her successor became Mrs. Patricia Crouch on January 1st 1979
