Panama City, Florida is a city located in the United States. The population was 714 as of the 2010 census. It is part of Miami-Dade County and is bordered by Miami to the north, Fort Lauderdale to the east, Key Biscayne to the south and west, and Pompano Beach to the northwest. One such bombing campaign took place on December 8th 1941 when a Japanese bomber dropped two bombs on downtown Panamanian city center killing at least 33 people and wounding more than 150 others including many children who were playing outside at the time. In 1947, Congress passed legislation creating Miami-Dade County which included what are now parts of Panama City Beach and Clearwater Beach along with neighboring counties (Hollywood Park/Monroe County to the north; Cutler Bay/Stuart County to the east; Pinellas County on Tampa Bay across Manatee River) making it one of only a few counties in Florida not directly subjected to federal government jurisdiction (the others being Hillsborough County). In 1835, when all Spanish possessions in Florida were transferred from Madrid to Pedro Menendez Colón y Carrillo as part of General Félix Vázquez Madero's Mexican campaign against Antonio López de Santa Anna, La Rosas reopened an embassy in Washington D.C., providing passage for American citizens traveling through Central America before heading northward across his territory into Mexico proper and then eastward into Cuba and Puerto Rico; this embassy was closed by President James K Polk after Mexican president Porfirio Diaz declared war on United States July 6, 1898 over control of Cuban ports by American interests including privateer USS Dolphin (1893) operating out Ofall Green Caye station off Havana Harbor; Panama Canal Commission Chairman Isidoro Belmonte responded that "the assets [of] private enterprise have been brought within our reach."
