After Trujillo's death in1846, his son Batista took control of Cuba and began developing Miami Beach into a resort town similar to Havana while allowing Panamanian citizens access to only limited development opportunities along their coasts until he came into power following World War II. From 1948 until 1961, Panama City served as seat of government for both Dade County (on the south side) and Monroe County (on the north side). On November 3rd, 1961, Dade County seceded from Monroe County; this event made Panama City again an unincorporated community within Dade County limits but reverted back to full municipal status on November 10th under Mayor Pedro Gonzalez de la Concha upon his inauguration as mayoraltywinner over Jorge Valdés Martinez Jr.. In 1973–1974 Hurricane Agnes caused extensive damage throughout much of central Florida; notably among these were many structures destroyed or damaged inside or near downtown Panama City: most notably St Andrews Episcopal Cathedral located just east across busy Government Street from where many tourists had come for religious services during Expo '74;[1][2] though damage was minor compared with other areas hit hardest by Agnes such as Daytona Beach which sustained serious flooding,[3] panama-city schools were closed for significant periods somehwere following Agnes while others reopened shortly afterwards having been rebuilt using funds raised locally via fundraising drives or private donations plus local materials brought over by residents/businesses evacuated during storm surge fears prior to landfall.[4][5][6][7] That same year saw increased attention paid given increasing concerns about environmental degradation caused predominantly by expanding international tourism gambling casinos developments oil drilling rigs found off shore near Pensacola - specifically Andros Island - leading some locals[8]to call for secession from panama-city government efforts Barranquilla voted overwhelmingly against secession on referendum ballots placed before assembled public sector workers protesting proposed cuts despite large sums spent campaigning against it[9], although later surveys showed majority support amongst locals not wanting their own special taxing jurisdiction within county boundaries
