Palmetto is a small, rural town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The area that now makes up Palmetto was first settled by Seminole Indians in the 18th century. In 1828, Captain John Smith discovered Palmetto Bay and named it for his native country, Panama. The first known settler in what is now Palmetto was James Cook on November 12, 1835 when he and his men anchored off the southeast coast of present-day Palmetto Bay to survey the new world. Cook's expedition had set out from England eleven days earlier than any other Englishman and their discoveries have been credited with starting American exploration and discovery efforts in this hemisphere. In 1839, a group of Creek Indians banded together to form the First Seminole War against Spanish colonists who were trying to establish a colony in Florida. After eight years of fighting and three months of raiding by both sides, peace was finally reached on February 28,1843 when Governor Manuel de la Vega signed an Treaty of Friendship between Spain and the Seminoles which provided for Cherokee (Creek) Indian status as well as reserved land located along Tampa Bayou east of St Petersburg for white settlement without Native consent or recognition by neighboring tribes such as the Osage (Arapaho) Nation. On July 5th 1840 arrived Constitution Wharf Commissioners George Kapp and Ebenezer Scudder - two early incorporators from Jacksonville who were also prominent land speculators - accompanied by Henry Flagler Jr., father of flagship commercial sailor Ernest Hemingway Flagler Sr., Govv’t Agent Jno Purdy &c constituteing Company organized under Act dated 3d day Febry 9th instant with 10 shares capital each subscribed for $200 each non-reserved sharehes allowed one vote at stockholders' meeting held informally atorses all directors except Mr flagler

Palmetto, Florida is a small town in southern Florida that has been around since the 1800s. The town was originally called "Natchez" and was founded by French colonists in 1763. The name came from the palmetto tree, which is common in the area. The first settlers were farmers and they grew crops and raised livestock. They also hunted deer, squirrels, turtles, and other game. After a while, some of the settlers started to build homes and grow crops themselves. By 1835, Palmetto had become a small farming community with about 200 people living there. Some of the early leaders of Palmetto include John Thornton who helped organize the Seminole Tribe of Florida into a state government in 1835; David Levy who served as mayor from 1868 to 1870; and Samuel Henson who was sheriff from 1875 to 1880. In 1907, Palmetto became part of Escambia County when it was created out of what were then parts of Spanish Miami and Fort Walton Beach counties. It remained an unincorporated community until 1965 when it became part of Palm Beach County on probation after its annexation by Broward County. In 1975, Palmetto voted to secede from Broward County because it felt that county officials were not doing enough for the town’s interests. This decision did not go well with county commissioners who tried to keep Palmetto within Broward County despite strong objections from residents. As a result of this dispute, many businesses closed down in Palmetto as customers refused to do business with counties that had seceded from their own government! In 1996, Palm Beach County annexing portions of Escambia and Manatee Counties made sure that all citizens within those counties would be included in any decisions made aboutPalm Beach County planning efforts or development plans! As a result of this merger (and others like it),Palm Beach County now has more than 14000 citizens living inside its borders! Despite having some struggles over the years – such as large population growth outside its boundaries – PalMETTO remains an extremely vibrant community full of history and culture which continues to thrive today!
