In the early 1800s, Palmetto was a landowner with extensive rifle stocks in the area. Jacksonville Battery's arsenal included several rifles along with cannons and mortar pieces that were stored at their facility on Second Street across from present day Jacksonville Landing School District headquarters building. Captain John Smith also owned large quantities of gunpowder and ordnance items that he used for testing purposes at his battery site along with munitions for use against Native Americans located throughout Central Florida during this time period. By 1850, Captain John Smith had passed away and his assets were divided between his three children who continued ownership over portions of his property until it reverted back to Spanish control following US annexation of Cuba in 1898. At this time, all Confederate sympathizers within Florida were summarily rounded up and deported without opportunity for trial or defense while many firearms owners within South Florida retained their rights under US law despite remaining under Confederate rule). In 1892 another group of settlers decided to move from Georgia into what is now Seminole County because they believed that it would be an ideal spot for farming cotton. After many years of growth and development in this area – including the founding of nearby towns such as Daytona Beach and Jupiter – Palmetto became one of Florida's leading communities. The town's success story can be partially attributed to its excellent location - close to both Tampa and Jacksonville - as well as its quality infrastructure which included a school system that rates highly among parents across all demographics! The phrase "palmetto state" was coined in 1898 by a group of Floridians who were exploring this area for oilInterests after learning about it from a Seminole chief. The name comes from an Everglades palm tree that grew near their town site. Palmetto is named for Colonel James Seddon (1777-1855) who served as U.S. Marshal for Florida from 1825 until his death in 1855. He had land west of Fort Myers which he divided into lots and sold to residents of various localities including Palmetto and Clearwater on March 3, 1851 under an act of Congress called "An Act For Establishing A Provision In Louisiana For West Florida". This act provided for Spanish settlers to be admitted into this territory as part of a treaty between Spain and Great Britain that ceded Florida following its victory over France in 1812 during the Napoleonic Wars; however no such admission happened because Spain still claimed sovereignty over WestFlorida when America gained independence from France four years later. In 1875, Colonel John Waddell established Palmetto Key Lighthouse on what is now known as State Key Lighthouse Point on Biscayne Bayou just south of downtown Palmetto City Limits; it was then one mile wide and two miles long with a three-story keeper's house/tower at its headland overlooking Biscayne Bayou with an open lighthouse keepers' room/storeroom on either side below ground level accessed via an underground tunnel leading eastward down to Biscayne Bayou where raw materials were brought ashore for construction projects ashore while supplies were taken ashore aboard ship docked at Biscayne Bayou for storage; there was also a small landing platform or wharf extending out into Biscayne bayou on which vessels could dock while awaiting shipment upriver or downriver depending upon river conditions at any given time). After several false starts due to lack of funding including bankruptcy among others, Waddell's original lighthouse became operational on October 15th 1865 following completion of five months worthof construction using only adobe bricks and mortar withstood hurricane damage caused by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 which destroyed much more important infrastructure within southeast Florida causing numerous economic losses totaling $100 million dollars domestically and internationally.; initially anchored offshore off Jupiter Island but moved inland due unsafe anchoring practices subsequent hurricanes), finally relocated permanently inside Fort Myers Harbor(now Davenport Street)surrounding Fort Myers after being damagedby Hurricane Ivan in 2008] In 1912 Augustus Ivey built Palm Beach Lakeside Resort - first golf course outside mainland US - adjacent northeast corner Of Intra Municipal Waterfront Park beach mowing lawns across water
