Palmetto, Florida is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town began as a development on the east side of Lake Okeechobee by J.P. Morgan and his partners in 1892. The name "Palmetto" was chosen because of its resemblance to a palm tree and its location on the banks of the Kissimmee River between Jacksonville and St Petersburg. In 1907, Palmetto became part of Duval County when it was created from parts of Flagler and Brevard Counties. In 1923, it became a city after being annexation by Jacksonville; it had been an unincorporated community since 1892. On November 3, 1928, Hurricane Hazel caused extensive damage to the city with winds up to 126 miles per hour (205 km/h). More than $1 million (2002 USD) worth of damage was done in three days alone due to wind gusts over 100 mph (160 km/h). The hurricane also destroyed many homes and businesses in downtown Jacksonville including Palmetto's first commercial building built within walls: Lumbermens' Hall on Federal Highway 95 just south of Orange Street which opened in 1896 as one of Jacksonville's first retail stores Aftermath: More than 2 million bricks were used to rebuild downtown Jacksonville- more than any other U.S city during that time period- making Palmetto one of America’s largest postwar rebuilding projects In response to Hurricane Katrina on August 29th 2004 nearly all businesses closed down with almost no relief given until September 9th 2004 when Mayor Philip Levine announced that all large box stores located along Federal Highway 95 would be open for business again beginning at 10am everyday except Sundays
Palmetto was founded in 1836 by a father and son. The original town site was on the east side of Palmetto Bay, about midway between Jacksonville and Tampa. From its early days, Palmetto enjoyed a strong trade presence with both the southern United States and Europe. The town's first store was established in 1837. By 1840, Palmetto had a population of around 100 citizens. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E Lee visited Palmetto during his campaign for the presidency; he spent several weeks here before setting off for Richmond. In 1865, following the Civil War, Palmetto became part of Florida Territory as part of the Unionist victory over Confederate forces at Johnson’s Creek Bridge. In 1892, while still an unincorporated community within Florida Territory, Palmetto incorporation was granted to it by Governor John Pemberton under state law No. 753-1892 (now known as Statute 448). On March 3rd of that year, Mayor James Hutton opened the new courthouse located on East Main Street in what is now downtown Palmettoland after spending many years designing and building the old one which had been destroyed in a fire two years earlier. The first post office in Palmettoland opened on November 5th of that year when J W Hampton from Jacksonville took delivery of mail from Fort Myers along with other supplies needed for garrisoning Fort Myers against possible Spanish attack during their Mexican-American War efforts (the only US military engagement to take place in Tampa Bay). He continued to deliver mail until his death on December 12th 1901 when postmaster William Kiser took over responsibility for operations until 1904 when James A Shultz succeeded him. As such Post Office #2 closed its doors May 15th 1907 after service continuous since Nov 5th 1901 thru Apr 15th 1907 inclusive; this being only 2 short months shy of 50 years!
