This company produced handguns and shotguns using exotic hardwood stocks that had been designed by rifleman John Browning himself. Their products gained notoriety for being very accurate over long distances thanks to their custom fit construction techniques pioneered at the Koehler Gun Workshops in Cincinnati Ohio where they were made until 1965 exclusively for PALMETTO Repeating Arms Company products only! The last manufacturing operation of any type occurred at the aforementioned Koehler Gun Workshops when they began making 1911 pistols for Jock Mahoney's Mahoney Firearms Corporation which became defunct after Mahoney left the business in 1978 . The first Europeans to visit Palmetto were Spanish missionaries in 1565 who named it La Gomera y la Palma de las Plantaciones (Gomera and Palm Beach). The town was founded by John Davenport and his family in 1824 as Davenportville after they left their plantation near Fort Moultrie for this area. A post office called Palmetto opened on October 7, 1903, and remained open until it closed on July 29, 1957 due to lack of mailboxes available in rural areas at that time. During World War II many people from nearby Fort Myers moved to Palmetto so that they could work on land supplied by the United States government; somestill live there today as descendants of those workers. One famous resident from this time period was Don Emmett Jarrell who wrote lyrics for both "Hernando" and "Forrest Gump". By 1887, Palmetto had become one ofFlorida's most important citrus towns with its principal crop being oranges. During World War II, much ofPalmetto was destroyed by Allied bombing raids; however, some sections such as East Beach and West Beach survived and continue to be used today as commercial areas. In 1963, Governor George C. Wallace announced his candidacy for President ofthe United States and chosePalmettoland as his campaign headquarters; he sold all his land south of Interstate 4 from Orange County back to private ownership within two months. The decision helped preserve many historical properties in Palmettoland while also contributing to its rapid growth over subsequent decades. Today, much ofthatgrowth has been due to redevelopment efforts around Interstate 4 which remain an important artery not just for traffic but also for tourism because of its proximity to Orlando International Airport
The Palmetto, Florida community ofPalmetto was founded in 1851 by Captain James Caldwell and his wife Anna. The first school in the area was built on the present site of town hall in 1857. The town of Palmetto was established on November 3, 1861. In 1865, a post office was established at Palmetto and remained in operation until 1903. In 1898, the name of the Town changed to Liberty because a new state charter had been adopted that year which granted citizens of Levy County full voting rights. In 1913, an express train station serving Jacksonville was built next to the current courthouse building which served as both town hall and local passenger depot until it closed in 1975. When Hurricane Andrew struck Sarasota County on August 15, 1992, much damage occurred including total destruction of two business blocks within the towns of Fort Myers and Pompano Beach; loss or destruction of over 1/3 million dollars worth of property; as well as 5 deaths from storm-related injuries.
