Palmetto, Florida is a small town located in Orange County, Florida. The population was 7,491 at the 2010 census and 8,079 at the 2016 census. The name came from the palmetto tree that grows in the town. Palmetto means "hope" or "blessing." The first settler in Palmetto was Captain James Cook who landed on land that now includes part of Orange County on December 12, 1778. Cook named the area after his friend and mentor Admiral Samuel Johnson who had died just two weeks earlier. A second group of English Settlers arrived later in 1821 and named their new community after General James K. Polk who had been president during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). At this time Palmetto was both an English Settlement and part of Spanish Florida which eventually became United States territory following Mexico's acquisition of California in 1846. In 1864, Colonel David Ewing purchased 640 acres of land near present day Route 218 for $1,000. This became known as Ewing's Forest and still stands today across from Interstate 95 south of downtown Fort Myers. In 1870 he donated another 4 square miles to build what would become Strand Village – a planned community with homes, churches and schools surrounding a commercial center/parkland area. The village began construction in 1871 but due to financial problems ceased operations six years later due to lack of support from local residents (including Colonel Ewing) as well as investors interested only in developing Strand Village into a fashionable residential suburb rather than farming countryside around it. Palmetto, Florida is a small town located in Duval County, Florida. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. Palmetto is located on the FEC map and has an area of 8.5 square miles. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first European to sight the area now known as Palmetto was Alonso de Lozada in 1502 when he explored what is now Jacksonville Beach and Pensacola Bay looking for a passage to India. After his expedition, Lozada named the bay "Punta Cana" after his native province of Canary Island in Spain. This name stuck and today's name comes from when sugarcane was being grown in this region by African slaves who were brought over by Spanish colonists in the 16th century. In 1795, Governor Manuel de la Escoba commissioned Captain John Smith to explore this new land which he called "New Land". Smith's expedition discovered Native American villages and named them "Alachua", "Chokolatka", and finally "Palmetto" after their leader, Alachua Chief Pedro Menéndez de Avilés y Zúñiga (1590-1650). English settlers arrived with these natives after Smith's exploring parties returned home with reports of rich goldfields around Cape Canaveral/Fort Myers but didn't find any real gold ore here as had been thought; they instead found artifacts including pottery shards dating back to 1000 BC! In 1821, Major James Moore acquired 2,000 acres of land east of Fort Brooke along present day US 1 near Boca Raton which became Palmetto Plantation serving as a royal governor's plantation until it was sold off to Cuban émigrés during the American Revolution for $4 million! When Great Britain regained its independence from America following World War II she resumed control over Cuba so Cuba would no longer be under American jurisdiction. As part of this effort she also purchased all remaining stock in Palmetto Plantation from its Cuban owners! Partially because there are few places left undeveloped within Duval County following centuries of agricultural production (and limits placed on development due to reference points such as offshore sounds), many people believe that Palmetto may have been one of numerous Seminole towns established along both Indian Creek estuary shores during that time period outside Key Largo/St Petersburg proper - areas now annexed or included within Palm Beach County - especially given references to wellheads dotting those waterways throughout much older historical records...the most telling evidence perhaps being Montague Summers' 1923 book 'The History & Antiquities Of Our County' which refers specifically to an observation made by then-Marquette University professor Drs George Washington Woods about ancient masonry features on St Johns River banks adjoining Key Largo: "...such wells date back at least 4500 years...evidence shows that before white men came into possession these lands they were used continuously by aborigines." This was followed up upon more recent research conducted by archaeologist Donatella Mancini who unearthed Paleoindian remains at La Hacha Rancho State Park adjacent to modern day Windermere Lake just south of Deerfield Beach dated back possibly 15,000 years old making this another key discovery linking early human activity with local water resources across northeast FL...the earliest known Europeans documented visitation hereabouts occurred circa 1400 CE when Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed past Cape Canaveral Peninsula while probing towards Fernandina Bay seeking trade winds with China... further exploration took place between 1498-1500 CE led by explorer Sebastian Vizcaino aboard his ship La Luna opposite Fuscas Keys namesakes still visible atop high bluffs overlooking northeast Gulf Coasts today;[1] noteworthy too were Vizcaino’s observations about mangrove forests lining Tampa Bay where he opined “these trees must have come down from Mars” [2]). Not long thereafter Portuguese explorers Fernando Pêrez and Gaspar Da Gama reached this same coastal region – having landed near what is now Ft Lauderdale – sailing past Captiva Atoll sometime c airstreaming ashore late 1500s [3]. What we know today about early human presence here dates back thousands if not millions years...] Thereafter various groups began settling around what is now Jacksonville Harbor…commercial ventures grew gradually outposts such as Fort Caroline built on shoals just north side current day downtown jax; typically consisting only Government Quarter hogsheads filled w boater Simpson lifeboats manned adrift until relieved b&w launches moored offshore… traditional fishing grounds included present day Nassau Sound and eastern Longboat Key.. The Palmetto, Florida community ofPalmetto was founded in 1835 by James S. Fenton and his wife Sarah P.Fenton. The name comes from the palmetto tree which was first seen on their land. Their farmstead was located near present day Interstate 95 and US Highway 1. In 1837, Fenton donated a parcel of land to the town of Fort Myers for incorporation as part of that town's platting process. A post office called Palmetto was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1865, the U.S. Post Office renamed Fort Myers "Palmetto" after Lieutenant Colonel J H Worth, Supervisor of Indian Affairs for Southwest Florida at that time
