In 1858, Colonel John Aiken started using muskets to shootgun targets and soon became known as the ‘Father of Pistol Shooting’ because he introduced handguns to this activity. Gun target shootings continued to be popular until around 1920 when trigger pull-happy youth began engaging in these activities without consequence or adult supervision. Since the late 1800s, there has been an increasing trend of people trying to ban guntargeting due to its potential danger to children and adults alike. However, this does not seem to be changing any time soon; it still remains one of the most popular activities enjoyed by residents in Palmetto County today!

The targets were originally used to target artillery pieces located in fortifications across Palmetto County. They continued to be used until the early 1940s.

In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all gun targets in the Nashville area to be removed as part of an effort to reduce Confederate munitions stockpiles.
In 1848, the first settlers in Palmetto Bay were two families from Georgia. They named their new colony "Palmetto." The first white post office was established in Palmetto in 1851. In 1865, the state of Florida acquired Palmetto Bay from Spain for $5,000. The bay became part of Miami-Dade County and is now part of Broward County. The citrus industry played a significant role in early Palmetto history. By 1860, there were over 10 plantations with oranges and other fruits production on three main tracts: Ascot Plantation on Asco Creek; Belleair Plantation on Live Oak Creek; and White Sands Plantation on Miami River. These plantations produced over 2 million pounds of oranges annually by 1870. When the Cuban Expedition walked into Cuba in 1898 and invaded that country, much of Palmetto was devastated by fire and Mafioso violence. More than 150 buildings were destroyed or damaged including most of the plantation homes along Withrow Road (now US 1). But despite these challenges, citrus production continued to thrive through World War II until it was supplanted by other agricultural crops such as corn and soybeans after Fidel Castro's 1959 invasion caused a sharp decrease in crop exports to Cuba which led to an economic downfall for many small farmers throughout the islands during that time period
The Palmetto Plantation was established in 1699 by James Duer. The plantation was located on the banks of the St Johns River in what is now Palmettoland, Florida. It was one of the most successful plantations in Florida and produced many slaves.
