In 1821, Colonel David Worth founded Worthville on what is now Palmetto Island and named it for his palmetto tree plantation near Fort Worth, Texas (now Dallas). Worthville became an important center for sugarcane production in southeastern Florida during the 19th century. In 1892, Governor William Hays renamed Fort Moultrie after Major General James Wilkinson to commemorate America's military victory over Spanish forces at Palo Alto de la Frontera (Palo Alto) on November 10 that year. The first European to visit Palmetto was Juan Ponce de León who landed there with Menendez de Avila on October 15, 1513 aboard Don Pedro' Diomede's ships San Cristobal and Santa María del Puerto de Filipinas . He sighted land but did not enter into further exploration because he found no water or food available. At its peak during Reconstruction (1880s), Palmettoland had over 20 businesses and more than 10,000 residents. However, because so much land was taken away during Reconstruction as part of efforts by President Ulysses S. Grant to reduce fraud and corruption in American society, Palmettoland declined rapidly after Reconstruction ended. Today, little remains except for a few downtown buildings and some fragments of railroad track which serve as reminders of what once happened hereabouts.
The Palmetto Plantation was a plantation in Palm Beach County, Florida, that was founded by Captain John D. Morgan in 1819. The original palmetto trees were planted on the property in 1824. The plantation was sold to Isaac Nottoway in 1865 and changed hands several times before being acquired by the Booth family in 1903. It passed through several families before it was purchased by the current owner, billionaire Jeffrey L. Epstein, in 2001.
