The economy of Palmetto is based largely on agriculture and fishing. The first Europeans to visit Palmetto were Spanish traders in 1665. In 1763, John Systeme landed at Palm Island on the Androscoggin River and named it after its ruler, Prince Charles of Spain. When Spain became independent from Spain in 1821, they changed the name to Orlando de Cartagena y Rojas for their new king, James Kiefer III. In 1845 Gilbert Stuart designed an estate for his son Frederick Augustus Worth at Belle Glade which later served as a summer home for Governor Andrew Jackson and his wife Rachelle Bonaparte Jackson during their time as United States Presidents (1848-1849). In 1878 Colonel Samuel Prentice bought land adjacent to Belle Glade and built a house that still stands today known as White Sands Plantation. Belle Glade was renamed Palmetto in 1865 by General Robert Ewell Taylor when he took control of Fort Brooke from elements of Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The town boundaries were redrawn following World War II when all but two square miles of Hendry County were annexed into Palm Beach County. Today only a small portion of White Sands Plantation remains within the limits of Palmetto proper while much larger tracts are part of neighbouring unincorporated communities such as Jupiter or West Palm Beach

Palmetto, Florida is a small town located in Seminole County, Florida. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is the most southwestern municipality in Seminole County and the second-most populous municipality in the county after Sanford. The townsite of Palmetto was first settled by African Americans. They were brought overland from Georgia as part of a slave trade that started on October 12, 1835. The palmetto tree is named for Captain James Cook's landfall on Jacksonville Beach on December 14th, 1795 when he and his crew sighted land to the east which they assumed to be Cuba until they found out it was Palmetto Island. On February 8, 1851 a post office called "Titusville" was established at what is now known as Palmetto Court House; it was moved from its original location two blocks south to its current location near US 1 and state Road 528 on May 13th of that year. In 1830 there were only six white residents living in Titusville and five black residents working as slaves for Isaac Watts & Sons store owners John Watts (father) and Samuel Watts (son). By 1840 there had grown to twenty-six white residents and thirty-five black residents working for various landowners including Solomon Kapp (purchaser), Abraham Hawkins (farming), Ebenezer Henson (mining), Archibald Livingston (warehousing), Job Reynolds (builder/contractor), Moses Goodloe Sr.(brewer/cider maker), Antoine Ransom(planter). In 1846 Giles Clark built an house on what is now US 1; this connection with Watsons may be why US 1 became known as "Clark's Lane." In 1861 Augustus Meeks arrived in Titusville from Savannah with his family; he immediately began construction of what would become today's courthouse complex including jail and post office buildings. He also began production of cigars which would soon becomeFlorida's biggest industry outside New York City Whyte Street Store - opened by him in 1887 - remains one of Titusville’s main commercial corridors today Brown’s Ferry Ferry Terminal served passenger boats going into Tampa Bay until 1975 when it closed due to corrosion issues caused by salt water intrusion beneath the docks Palmetto Landing – founded circa 1850 – still contains several contributing buildings from that era such as Works Progress Administration owned movie theater which operated intermittently during World War II before closing down completely in 1951 Stonington Lutheran Church renovated between 2003-2004 features restored period Carpenter Gothic Revival architecture unique among Seminole County churches Main Street features three large powder magazines dating back to 1840s located adjacent to high school across street Evangelical Lutheran Church reworked between 2003-2004 features Arts & Crafts style architecture unique among Seminole County churches Today, much like then, PalmetTO enjoys a diverse mix of cultures with descendants living all over America both inside and outside the United States government has played an important role within its community maintaining public services such as education through local schools while also sponsoring pride events such as PALMETTO SUMMER FESTIVAL every year since 1978 being one of many festivals celebrated throughout season

In 1819, Christopher Columbus discovered the island of Cuba and named it Isla de la Bahia for his discovery. The Spanish explorer Hernando Cortez reached Florida in 1493 and named it La Florida after the city of Seville, Spain, where he had been born.
