The first settler in Palmetto was Captain John Ladd who arrived on horseback on July 3rd, 1868. He built a cabin on what is now state road 308A. In 1870 Captain David Witherspoon erected another cabin on land now occupied by state road 519A. By 1872 there were seven or eight families living in Palmetto with seventy five acres ( thirty three hectares) of land under cultivation and sixty four acres ( twenty six hectares) of forested land remaining undeveloped." In 1903 PalmetTO became an incorporated municipality when it joined Seminole County along with several other towns in Florida's southwest region. At that time its population was just over 1,500 people and most of its growth came from annexation of neighboring communities such as Sanford and Winter Haven." In 2003 Palmettoland opened up new businesses including an amusement park called Worlds Fair Park which attracted more than 20 million visitors since it opened." After almost fifty years growing steadily but never achieving statewide recognition as a major tourist destination due to competition from Orlando), Palmettoland declared bankruptcy in 2016 after spending $200 million building new attractions without generating much revenue."
The Palmetto, Florida area was first inhabited by the Timucua people. The first European to visit the area was Captain John Smith in 1539. In 1763, the Spanish founded a mission at St. Augustine and named it San Juan Bautista de los Padres. The mission was abandoned in 1768 and the land passed into Indian ownership. In 1813, a group of Seminoles attacked Spanish settlers near Stonington and killed nine men and captured three women. After this attack, Spain ceded Florida to United States in 1819 as part of the Treaty of Paris. The U.S.-controlled region included much of what is now Palm Beach County and parts of Broward County today.
