Green and his brother George Waddell as part of an effort to divide land between them in what is now Kendall County. They named their tract Palmetto after a palm tree that grew on their farmstead. It was originally called the "Pine Grove School" but it changed its name to the "George Washington High School" because of money being spent on building a new campus for it near downtown Miami. In 1912, Palmetto voted to become a city and it did so with help from businessman Averill Harriman who donated land for its incorporation and $10,000 in cash gifts from his father Thus making Palmetto one of the most financially prosperous towns ever formed within Miami-Dade County. In 1916, Mayor Harry Laughlin recommended that Palmetto annex neighbouring unincorporated territory known as Coconut Creek which would have givenPalmetto annexation rights over all of Coconut Creek including much of Broward County which then became part of Miami-Dade County It didn't happen though – annexation applications were coming in incessantly from other municipalities across Dade County until finally Palmetto's request for annexation was denied on November 21, 1951 During World War II, when many Bombing raids were conducted against Nazi targets inside South Florida using aircraft equipped with explosives hidden beneath wings or under engines they used bomb damage assessors who lived just outside of PALMETTO to measure how much bomb damage had been done to buildings here; some members of City Council thought this would be a good idea because they could get information about potential repair/replace costs without having to go into detail about every property

In 1885, white man Edwin Rollins bought 5 square miles of land from the Chickasaw Nation for $1 million. He named it after a palm tree that grew near his plantation home inGeorgia. In 1907, citrus growers Wanda Ladd and her husband John Ladd began growing palmetto fruit on their 2,500 acre (1 km2) tract of land just south of downtown Palmetto. They became known as “the original gators” because they ate no meat or vegetables during their diet but relied solely on fruit. By 1912 they had developed a processing plant to crush the fruit and export India Pale Ale (IPA) made from the rinds of oranges and other fruits

Palmetto is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,812 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Palmetto" comes from the palmetto tree, which grows in this area of central Florida. The first white settler in Palmetto was James Purdy who arrived in 1835. He built a cabin on what is now known as Park Avenue and named it "Purdy's Fort." The fort served as a trading post between North America and Europe for many years until 1845 when it was burned by Seminole Indians during the Second Seminole War. In 1848 Colonel John Cushing established a military post at what is now called Cushing's Fort (now Fenton Road). This post served as a base of operations for Confederate forces during the American Civil War because it lay near to Mobile Bay where Union warships were based. When Congress passed the Proclamation creating West Palm Beach on November 8, 1912, Palmetto became part of that municipality and its first mayor was Arie Beisner. Beisner had been born in Germany but emigrated to New York City when he was eighteen years old to become an American citizen and join his brother Alex Beisner who owned land east of downtown Manhattan near Central Park. When he moved there Alex had built two houses on Third Avenue between Broadway and 54th Street – one belonging to Commodore Perry’s secretary Adolphus Wohlstetter (1802-1892) and one being occupied by Judge David Levy (1793-1872), future Mayor Abram Dyson (1868-1943) and future Congressman Lewis Hogg (1915-.1974). In 1916 Arie Beisner married Clara Barton Ames who also came from Russia but her parents were Americans so she could become an American Citizen too; they raised their children here before moving them back to Russia after World War II when they were naturalized citizens US citizens Later mayors included: Harry Shriver (1941-) ; Art Rooney Ivey Jr.—1975-1981 ; Bill Curry—1983-1987 ; Edwin Meese III—1989-1991 ; Carlos Ramos—1993-1995 ; Lawton Chiles—1997-1999 Aspaletto annexed Stonington Township on February 3rd 1999 with 1,521 residents while Plantation annexed Coral Gables Township on March 2nd1999 with 1,693 residents
