Palmetto is a small town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Palmetto comes from the Seminole word "palmota," meaning "place where palms grow." The town began as a stop on the old Santa Fe Railroad in 1901 and rapidly grew as a result of its proximity to Tampa and its good soil for agriculture. Butler who had fought at Chickamauga and Chattanooga (in what is now Alabama). A vote was held on November 3, 1924 to change the name to "PalMETTO" and soon afterwards construction began on what would become downtown PalMETTO which opened in 1926. Today's downtown contains several high profile restaurants such as City Tavern (renowned for its seafood), Benares Cafe (a Mediterranean restaurant), Sarasota steakhouse & lounge (the only steakhouse nearby), BJ’s Brewster’s Pub & Grill (an American chain), Boomerang Chinese Buffet ($) and more than 20 smaller stores including 7-Eleven, CVS Pharmacy, Safeway Supermarket/Grocery store etc... The area was part of the Pensacola Indian Reservation until 1819 when it became part of the United States as part of the Compromise of 1850. The first white settlers arrived in Palmetto in 1845 and began to homestead on what is now the east side of town. By 1870, there were around 100 people living in Palmetto. In 1886, residents voted to incorporate as a town and named it after Major General James Hernando De Soto, who had won fame during his attempt to explore Cuba. In 1949, following Hurricane Anna which killed over 50 people in South Florida and caused extensive damage throughout the state, Congress passed legislation providing for FEMA assistance for towns affected by disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes. As a result of this act, Palmetto became one of 131 communities nationwide that received Federal aid during the crisis period known as “the Great Recession”. Since its incorporation into Broward County in 1886, Palmetto has experienced growth due to its proximity to Fort Lauderdale and other western municipalities as well as its position along Interstate 95 corridor which helped make it an attractive location for commuting commuters from Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach. This growth also led to development along State Road 710 which served as an important artery linking Palm Beach Gardens with downtown Fort Lauderdale through Weston Park Boulevard and Hollywood Boulevard; both developments are still extant today though portions have been discontinued or converted into subdivisions within their respective municipalities respectively.
The Palmetto plantation was a sugar cane plantation in the corner of Palm Island and New Providence Roads in present-day Palm Beach County, Florida. The original Palmetto Plantation was founded by Captain John Smith in 1763. It was acquired by James Floridas in 1824, who sold it to Abraham Lincoln for $2,000. The first white settler on the island was David Levy in 1793. In 1821, the property passed to James Buchanan and became part of his Miami Land Grant. In 1865, the land passed back to Abraham Lincoln's family after he bought it from Buchanan's heirs. After Abraham Lincoln died, his son Ulysses S. Grant inherited the plantation and renamed it "Palmetto". The last owner of the plantation before its sale to USAAF Base West Point is Mrs. Alice Ladd Alexander (1910-1994).
