The first European to visit Palmetto was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 as part of his exploration of the Tampa Bay region. In 1668, Capt. John Smith and his men werethe first Europeans to landed on what is now Palm Beach County when they founded Fort Lauderdale. The area that would become Palm Beach was then known as "Tarrant's Plantation." In 1795, Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés discovered and named this area Palmetto Key after Colonel James Pogue (1753–1810) who had been dispatched by Spain to explore the southeast coast of America. Captain George Washington claimed this key for the United States in 1799 during their campaign against Spain under General James Wilkinson during the War for Independence. In 1802, Thomas Jefferson sent Surveyor Christopher Wessels with a group of settlers to purchase land from José Antonio Carrillo y Prado near present-day West Palm Beach Boulevard and Biscayne Boulevard in what would become Miami-Dade County. By 1807 there were over 100 white families living on 1 square mile (2 km²) at Flagler's Creek which included: five homes (later called Wessels' House), two carts load ( later called Pompadour House), two pigs, twelve acres (5 ha), one hundred fifty feet deep water well and a sawmill run by Columbus Smith which produced lumber until 1835; three slaves: Antoine Pierre Lafitte(1787–1851); Martha Ann White(1789–1860); Lorenzo de la Vega(1800–1849). He named it Fort Gracia Real de la Bahía de Santiago de Cuba after Queen Maria Teresa's Spanish fortress at Santiago de Cuba which he had seen while sailing his brigantine, HMS Beagle across the Atlantic Ocean. On 7 January 1835, Captain Palmetto organized a party including nine men to explore new lands west of Tampa Bay when they discovered this territory lying between Nome and Apalachicola Inlets - which today is part of Pinellas County - within Seminole Nation boundaries as well as uncharted tracts eastward into Georgia and Alabama Territory (later Baldwin County). On 10 April 1835, they erected a small hut near present-day Boynton Beach for their temporary headquarters during their exploration; these early settlers were among those who later donated land to form Palm Beach County. At least one other group attempted an expedition from Fort Pierce but returned emptyhanded due to lack of food or water supplies overland from Tampa Bay through Georgia into South Carolina before finally reaching Indian Key on 12 July 1835.
