Palmetto is a small town located in Duval County, Florida. The population was 4,026 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The Palmetto community began as two farmsteads on the southeast corner of what is now State Road 6 and Federal Highway 190 in 1887. The first post office was established in 1912. When state road 6 was rerouted around the town in 1927, it followed Federal Highway 190 east to its current terminus at US 87 near Jacksonville. In 1933, when US 100 was rerouted through Jacksonville, it became concurrent with Federal Highway 190 towards Fort Myers and then along State Road 6 north to reach Palmetto. In 1957, when Interstate 95 bypassed Jacksonville and parts ofDuval County, much of Palmetto came under federal jurisdiction; this included most of the eastern border of Duval County including portions of present-day Palm Beach County and Stonington Island. However, much remained within state control until 1990 when Florida lawmakers authorized county-level development plans for all unincorporated areas within each county except for Jacksonville which continued to be governed by Duval County government officials until that year. As a result of this change in government structure, many businesses closed or were relocated to other counties during the late 1990s as local governments struggled with budget deficits and increasing competition from outside forces such as Miami-Dade County (the largest county in Florida) and Broward County (the second largest). Today much of what once constituted Palmetto has been redeveloped into mixed-use neighborhoods including smaller farms that have been replaced by high-rise buildings; however, some older homes remain standing scattered throughout downtown while other properties have been demolished or are being leased out for residential use only. The discovery led to an onslaught of exploration and development within Flagler's jurisdiction; plantations were razed and new towns were born around crude wells scattered throughout the region Tobacco Creek Field (later known as Sanford), Placida (near present-day Pensacola), Fort Myers (near present-day Live Oak), Sanibel Island (now part of Clearwater), Fort Walton Beach (then known as Altamonte Springs), Palm Bayou (now part of Vero Beach) and Stonington Harbor on Longboat Key Peninsula soon followed suit. By 1870 Flagler had built twenty-one miles of railroad track through rural areas surrounding his estates - making him one of America's first self-made billionaires. In 1898, following General William Sherman's march on Tampa Bay Bridge during World War II which destroyed much infrastructure alongthe Gulf Coast including navigation systems used by naval vessels sailing into or leaving Tampa Bay Naval Station - Palm City developed into one of America's most vibrant coastal communities despite difficult times during war years when resources dwindled quickly due to rationing mandated by President Franklin D. The Palmetto, Florida history begins with the arrival of Europeans in what is now Palmetto County on November 3, 1565. The area that would become Palm Beach County was first settled by Native Americans, who named it Pahkunkehkonkonka (Creek lands). The first European to come to this part of the country was Christopher Columbus, who sighted the islands off the coast ofFlorida in 1492. In 1821, Jacksonville was founded as a result of a treaty between Great Britain and America that ended the Seminole War. By 1835,Palmetto had become one of Florida's most developed counties. In 1855, Congress passed an act designating Palm Beach County as a county seat for Broward County in order to hasten its development. This event helped spur economic growth in both counties and led to their merger into one entity on January 1, 1893. The region that would become Palm Beach County experienced rapid growth during World War II thanks to its strategic location at the mouth ofthe Everglades River and its ties to Miami-Dade Countysuch as naval base and manufacturing plants. As a result of wartime expansionism, Palm Beach Parish became one of South Floridas earliest municipalities and also saw significant construction activity related to military airport projects such as Boca Raton Airport and West Palm Beach Municipal Airport.
