Palmetto was founded in 1892 and named for the palmetto tree which grows there. The first post office in Palmetto opened in 1893. The name of the town changed to Palmetto after World War I when letters were no longer received from New York City because of the war efforts there. In 1925, the US Post Office moved from Palmetto to Fort Lauderdale and renamed it Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood. In 1948, Fort Lauderdale Airport was built south of town on land donated by developer Edwin Bogan. It served as Valdosta's primary airport until it closed in 1976 and became Palm Beach International Airport. The airport has been home to many airlines including American Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines since its opening. On October 15th 1928 a tornado touched down near mile marker #8 on Umatilla Road near what is now Gulfstream Park Racetrack; however only three homes sustained damage due to hail stones that struck trees close by (the majority did not suffer any damage). That same day Hurricane X formed over Cuba and produced winds up to 175 mph (280 km/h) along its path across much of South Florida; this storm spawned Tornadoes EF4 – F5 off Grand Staircase Escarpment within 9 miles (14 km) of Live Oak Key east of Jupiter Inlet - one damaged an oil refinery before dissipating into cooler air about 25 miles SE of Daytona Beach.; those tornadoes killed four people and injured twenty five others; also note that X never made landfall as a major hurricane
