The Palmetto, Florida area was first settled by the Seminole people in the 17th century. In 1821, the United States acquired it from Spain as part of the Seminole Wars. The name "Palmetto" is derived from "pala" meaning “pine” and "mett." The first settler in what is now Palmetto County was John Covington, who platted a town on palmetto boughs north of present-day Tampa. In 1827, David Worth founded Worthville on an island in Hillsborough Bay and named it after himself. By 1830, there were over 100 settlers living on the island. In 1836, Samuel Troup established Tallahassee on an island to the east of Tallahassee Townships and named it after his friend and mentor James K. Polk. The towns developed around phosphate mines that were located along the coastal plain of central Florida at this time. By 1840, there were about 250 residents living in Tallahassee and 150 residents living on its adjacent islands.
