Palmetto is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Marquette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Palmetto settlement began as a farmstead on the banks of the Kissimmee River in 1824. In 1826, Colonel James Wofford and his men built a fort here to protect their rancho from Seminole Indians. The fort served as an important garrison until 1839 when it was abandoned and burned by Seminoles under orders of President Andrew Jackson. In 1842, Captain John Ainsworth founded Fort Union on the site of present-day Palmetto after finding white man's bones thereabouts. On May 12, 1840, Ainsworth received word that General David Walker had laid siege to Fort Moultrie on Savannah Island with 2,500 Native Americans supporting him and seeking revenge for Walker's Defeat at Horseshoe Bend two years earlier. With only about 100 soldiers left to oppose Walker's force of 10,000 militiamen and 1 cannon (the light cannon then known as "Baldy" because its barrel was so large), Ainsworth ordered his men to lay down their arms and march back into camp across the river to safety. Five days later he received word from Lieutenant Elijah Boudinot that General Phillips had defeated Walker's army near Walt Disney World and drove them eastward across Chef Menteur Creek Bridge into Indian country beyond Mobile Bayou; consequently, Walker was successful in cutting off all communication betweenFlorida and Georgia during this critical period in American history - opening up new opportunities for development south of Tampa Bay! Captain Ainsworth organized a detachment of 50 volunteers under Major Edward Prentiss to supply stores for General Phillip's army while he fought againstWalker; these soldiers became known as the " Fifty Floridas". When hostilities ceased on October 20th following Franklin Pierce's inauguration as President George Washington’s Vice Presidential candidate – just three weeks after Governor Manuel López de Santa Clara had surrendered Pensacola without any resistance – Captain Ainsworth returned home via Havana with newly acquired prisoners who were paroled upon learning that Florida would be admitted into the Union! As news spread throughout Florida about this watershed event – including reports from Pensacola – many citizens came out guns blazing to celebrate what must have been oneofthegreatestvictoriesofthe 19th century! On July 9th 1890 US Army Lt Col Hiram Jettman replaced CaptainsAInsworthandPrentissonFortUnion dutiesandbecame responsiblefor administratingrecreationalfacilitiesontheFortMoultrie&Ftuniongroundsuntil1894whenhewasassignedthespecialinvestigationintocorruptionamongFederal employeesinvolvedin DestructionofFloridaLandlordsLibrary& ArchivesduringThe Progressive Era! In the early 1800s, Palmetto was a small, rural community in south Florida. The land that makes up today's Palmetto was first settled by Seminoles in the late 1700s. By 1819, when U.S. Captain James Wilkinson founded Fort Brooke on this land, the area had become known as "The Great Bay of Naples." In 1828, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and decided to move westward from Tennessee into what is now Missouri and Arkansas. He bought 2 million acres of land grants from Spanish colonists inFla., east of Tampa Bay. This area lay at the foot of what is now Palm Beach County and included much of current-day Broward County and Miami-Dade County. In 1829, word spread through Fla about President Jackson's plan to build a road from St. Augustine to Jacksonville via Everglades National Park and The Keys (now Key West). Businesses grew rapidly along this new road; so much so thatJackson built two more forts: Fort Brooke on Santa Maria Island and Fort Myers on Biscayne Bayou near Homestead Lake. On November 7, 1830, just days after he took office as President of the United States, Jackson signed an act incorporating Miami-Dade County into Florida; it was one of only three counties in Florida not to be admitted until 1783 (the others were Hillsborough and Pasco). Jacksonville became its capital; Palmetto served as its second city. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1861-1868), Palmetto experienced rapid growth due to military installation activity around nearby Pinellas Park Naval Air Station (later Clearwater Naval Air Station) during World War II (1939-1945). After 1945 many businesses closed down becauseBroward county had no government support for economic development outside Ofirmehland/Stuart county proper during these years when jobs were available only within those borders regionally...
