Palmetto, Florida is a small town located in Wakulla County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The Palmetto community was founded by white people who arrived in 1837 as refugees from the Seminole Wars. The first post office was established in 1839. In 1865, the Palmetto Railroad was chartered and became part of the Florida Central Railroad system. In 1896, a group of phosphate miners who had brought their mining equipment to Wakulla County began developing a town on PALMETTO Island due to its fresh water resources and cheap land prices. The name "Palmetto" was chosen because it resembled an ancient palm tree found near Naples, Italy during those days. The first store opened in 1903 and soon there were several hotels and other businesses along US-1 dedicated to tourists coming to see the old plantation houses and plantations that dotted the island's landscape. By 1912 there were also six churches on PALMETTO Island: two Baptist Churches (1899), one Methodist Church (1902), one Presbyterian Church (1911), one Catholic Church (1914), and one Roman Catholic Church (1920). Because phosphatemining operations were so important to Wakulla County's economy during this time period, many schools were built including Palmetto School District No 5 which opened in 1907; Stonington School District No 3 which opened in 1909; Plantation Heights School District No 4 whichopened in 1911; New Hill School District No 2 whichopened in 1915; Spanish Fort Elementary School(nowFriendship Baptist)which Opened In 1927; North Gulf Elementary School(nowHernando High)which Opened In 1929; PINELLAS Middle/High school whichopenedin 1933and closed 1980.; West Gulf ElementarySchool(nowGulf Breeze High)which Opened In 1935and closed 1979.; Pinellas Beach Middle/High school whichopenedin 1939and closed 1980., Coral Gables Intermediate school open since 1954., Eastside Intermediate school open since 1961., Southside Intermediateschool open since 1963., Heritage Middle/High school open since 1974(). A new airport named Will Rogers International Airport opened near Ormond beach on PALMETTO Island on November 12th 1958 with service from Miami-Dade County Airport . On May 30th 1975 local citizens approved plans for annexation of neighboring Muskegon Heights Township creating what is now Wakulla county government services are delivered through Homestead Park Municipal Services Administration Office located at 6595 NW 87th Street Suite 103 Jacksonville FL 32258

It was founded in 1984 as the Palmetto Historical Society and has since grown to include more than 20,000 artifacts related to the history of Palmetto and its surrounding area.
