The first settlers to what is now Palmetto were farmers who came from Georgia in 1819. They named their land "Baldwin's Plantation" after James Baldwin who had come to Florida that year as a trader with Spain and Cuba. In 1827 James Baldwin sold his land to Colonel William Bradford of Jacksonville for $1,000 cash which he used to finance his purchase of another piece of Baldwin's land which he named "Stroud's Plantation". He also built a plantation house there which still stands today called "The Baldwins". Captain John Fenton bought two-thirds interest in Captain Bradford's plantation on December 20, 1830 from Colonel William Bradford for $8500 cash plus sixty acres (24 houseless) added to it at various times over time including 1840 when he changed the name to "Fenton’s Plantation" and 1860 when he changed it back again to "Bradford's Plantation". Captain John Fenton was born in 1794 and died in 1865. He was married twice and has six children by both marriages: James Fenton (1836-1896), Frances Aiken (1839-1920), Infant Alice (1841-1920), Alfred Vinton (1844-1900), Mary Jane Fenton(died young) ,and Carlton Crouse Fenton(born 1861). Captain John Fenton is buried at Greenwood Cemetery near Jacksonville .
