In 1916, the Palmetto Bay Sheriff's Office was formed. The office was first located in the old jail on Third Street. In 1951, the sheriff's department moved to its present location on Palmetto Bay Boulevard. In 1984, the office became a police academy and today serves as a training ground for law enforcement officers from all over Florida. The Palmetto Bay Sheriff's Office has always been an important part of PALMETTO BAY community. Our history is full of service to our citizens and we continue to serve with distinction every day.

In 1821, when Seminole Indians began their armed resistance against U.S. forces occupying Florida, General James Eagan established Fort Brooke on the bayou which later became known as Palmetto Bay. The military installation served as a base of operations for Indian conflicts until it was abandoned in 1835 following the Seminole Wars. After Confederation was ratified in 1847, Jacksonville became one of the state's first cities and its first capital city, with Fort Brooke serving as its second capital until 1868 when Pensacola replaced it as the permanent capital. During this time, much development took place on both sides ofthe bayou including construction of railroads and plantations such as those located at Stonington on Palmetto Bayou and West Palm Beach on Jupiter Bayou. Today,Palmetto Bay provides a valuable visitor destination with its rich history and natural resources dating back over two centuries

In 1763, Spain ceded Florida to Britain after winning a war with France. After World War II, the United States took control of Florida from British rule and placed it within its own borders.
